Judges? Bzzzzt! Oh! Sorry . . .

Actually - if one states they are an addict or an alcoholic and their job performance suffers - they're covered under the Americans with Disabilites Act. (Kinda - it's a little fuzzy - but it is covered under the ADA.)

Right or wrong - - - don't matter - it's the law.

Soooo....if Ben Roethlisberger had just let it be widely known that he was a "sex addict" he could claim he was covered by the ADA and escape punishment?!? Now that is a legal strategy I would be interested in seeing the outcome.

There are stipulations to the ADA clause. However I do not think sex addiction (or being an asshole) are covered, just chem-dep issues.

I have lived here for 48 years and I'm also a hoarder of sorts. We have had garage sales at times and every time I sell an item or get rid of that I haven't used for several years it gets sold and in days I find a use for it.This has happened many times. My barn is a complete disaster. There used to be a path inside to feed the cat. No more cat! No more path! I am starting lately to get rid of a lot of things now that we are remodeling the house.  ::)

Mr. Zip and I used to go round and round about that. He's a "picker" too. It used to bother me until I realized the benefits...

#1) He can fix dang near anything that's broken around here with a piece or a part he's "picked", or a part he's fabricated from a picked piece.

#2) He's actually sold some of his pickings on Ebay when we were low on cash, and turned in a bunch of scrap metal he salvaged. It sure came in handy when the toolmakers were all getting laid off and his hours were cut back.

#3) His junk keeps him busy. He enjoys picking and making stuff, and a happy Mr. Zip means a happy Mrs. Zip.

#4) Should we ever face a disaster of sorts, his creative use of his junk will keep us going for some time. He's got otherwise useless doodads that people tossed because technology advanced, but in the event of no access to technology, electrical failure or computer outages... those with the oldest, least techno-doodads might just do ok.

So I learned to appreciate all the stuff... as long as I don't have to look at it or clean around it.

Mr. Zip is very cerebral. It wouldn't surprise me if he set up a scenario where we needed a gidgey-gadget on a thing-a-ma-jig, and he just happened to have one like it in the garage, because that would "learn me" to keep quiet when he brings home more junk...

I suppose my two overstuffed clothes closets are a bit of a hoarding too... but I do wear it all... eventually.

 :)

It's the "dirty" part of hoarding that is so nasty. People can have a warehouse of junk, as long as it's organized and clean it wouldn't bother me.

But the rats and feces, and nastiness... that's a different sickness other than hoarding, isn't it?

Agreed. (been there done that..)

The inablity of true hoarders to clean ie, a cat lady type, that is the scary part. I think that gets into OCD-anxiety issues.  Hoarding is a manifestation of it.  (psychology according to HM.. lol)

What about those who just are into nasty. Like the people who go dirty up a public restroom. I know it happens and I really feel for the people who have to clean it up.

When I was about 18 yrs old I knew a girl who just refused to clean her house. She wasn't into hoarding... keeping "things"... she just wouldn't clean. That has to be an illness all of it's own. People who are afraid of the word "housework" or "trash bag".

Hey, maybe that's it... a fear of trash bags?

And in keeping with the trash bag theme, here's an interesting article about banning the little earth-destroyers alltogether.

Hoarding is a sickness, and those people need help.  Sympathy, yes, but also help.  I have a friend that, everytime she buys a new article of clothing or household decoration, she gives something away.  That's the only way to go.
