Meadvillians Living Elsewhere
« on: September 06, 2007, 10:46:25 AM »
Don't you think it would be interesting to hear why we don't live in Meadville anymore? Inquiring minds want to know:

• How long has it been since you lived in Meadville (Crawford County)?
• What prompted you to leave?
• Would you move back if you had your current job in Meadville?
• How often do you visit the area?
• What do you think the city needs to do to bring people back to the area?
• Do you think these forums work almost like a virtual Chamber of Commerce?

I left Meadville in 1980 and moved to Fort Myers, Florida.
In 1982 I moved to Anchorage, Alaska.
In 1988 I moved to Redondo Beach, California.
In 2001 I moved to The Tampa Bay area.
I also wear a size 11 shoe if I have not provided anough information.  ;D

I have returned to Meadville only to discover the saying "You can't ever go home again" holds water for me. I would have incredibly mixed feelings about returning there to live. Yes, it's my home town and I spent my formative years there. It was a great place to grow up really. However, Meadville has changed, but it hasn't changed if that makes any sense.

I don't have the answers that would bring Meadville back to its glory days. I know that they passed on the opportunity to get a Cummins engine plant and a Miller Brewery in town. They wanted the business but they also wanted 100% of the employees to be from Meadville I'm told. I'm sure there have been other opportunities that have passed by.

Meadville needs diversity in jobs obviously. The city is heavily dependant on metal fabrication to some extent. The tool business is great, but it's also cyclical and in the down times the city suffers for it. This is not the fault of the toolmakers as the demand for the work is driven by outside forces.  Meadville has a lot to offer a company looking to relocate. Meadville is 40 miles from a city with a small town to rural atmosphere. Real estate is reasonably priced and the overall cost of living is faily low for a city located so close to major cities.

Do I think these forums work like the COC? No. The COC may need a god kick in the pants to get them looking to bring in outside business. They will also have to stop playing so hard nosed about not wanting outside people coming in. It's a double edged sword, you take in the business and it has some baggage. But don't run them off before they even draw up a contract.

I don't visit Meadville often enough.

How long has it been since you lived in Meadville (Crawford County)?
I moved August of 98.

What prompted you to leave?
I needed a teaching job and wasn't going to sub forever.  My BF at the time was transferring with Lord Corp.

Would you move back if you had your current job in Meadville?
Maybe.  The pay would be great and the cost of living would be better but I would miss living in a city and having the beach an hour and a half away.

How often do you visit the area?
Usually twice a year.  Once in the summer and once at Christmas.  Now that I teach at a year round school, I have 4 times a year to choose from.

What do you think the city needs to do to bring people back to the area?
Good question.  There isn't enough shopping.  The Theater could bring in shows to draw larger crowds - comedy!  You can't change the weather so that is a no go.  I'm not really sure.  I wouldn't go back because when I do, it is as if I've travelled into a time warp and I'm back in high school except the setting is usually in Mickey's.

Do you think these forums work almost like a virtual Chamber of Commerce?
Not really.  I get all of my scoop from my sister.

• How long has it been since you lived in Meadville (Crawford County)?
January 2006
• What prompted you to leave?
Laid off by GE, found more secure employment in the south
• Would you move back if you had your current job in Meadville?
Not sure, economy is pretty bad & the good-ole boys are still mucking things up.
• How often do you visit the area?
Weddings, Funerals & 1 vacation a year (it's one stop in many "up north" to see family)
• What do you think the city needs to do to bring people back to the area?
jobs, jobs, jobs. The technology incubator idea is great. I also like Edinboro running a campus at the Industrial Park. I also think that there should be some type of tax break for people that want to open their business downtown. Let them live above the store if they want to. And REOPEN the 2001 Club!!!
• Do you think these forums work almost like a virtual Chamber of Commerce?
I believe that these forums can open up a dialogue between people who care about the community & also give outside people a view of what actually goes on. As long as there is civil discourse, I believe we can be a catalyst for change.
