Sandy's European Market to Close
« on: March 22, 2009, 07:34:17 AM »
I heard through the grapevine that Sandy's is closing up to become a restaurant.

I asked one of the girls in the front yesterday but they weren't saying much, whether it was lack of knowledge or keeping mum  ???

Anyone know what's going on there?

I'll have to ask my father about that next time I talk to him. He goes there almost daily to have coffee with his friends in the morning. Not that he would would be any more in the know if the wait staff doesn't know anything. Now if Meadville had it permitting online it would be really easy to find out.

I love Sandy's Market....I buy a lot of my fresh meats there and often times imported cheeses.

I know Sandy wanted to open a restaurant when he and Ray broke off relations with Sandalini's and there were stipulations about whether Sandy could open a restaurant (this was all in the local paper).

Now that Ray has passed on, I wonder if this is the next move for Sandy?

We really could use another decent restaurant in Meadville.  I hope it's true but in a way it's sad to think the market will be closing down.

I don't think it will be open anymore as of today and there were no signs in the place yesterday telling the customers anything.  Kinda hush-hush and here I am blabbering it all to you  :D :D

I remember reading that no-conflict thing. Sandy's being allowed to be a restaurant due to some kinda contractual thing when one fellow left to start his own place . . .

Their pharmacy closed up a few months ago. I see folks shopping there, but not a ton. I would hope they keep the gas station open. A lot of folks use it - and if the only places in town were the two Kwik-Fills and the Country Fair - well - the congestion would be insane. Of course - gas pumps and a restaurant would be kinda like a truck stop. Don't know how they'd pull that off.

If they could do something similar to Cracker Barrel - that'd be interesting. Especially if they continued to sell specialty foods - or even better - sold some stuff in bulk. (That'd be more Cracker Barrelish than Cracker Barrel - - - or as I like to refer to it: the "Caucasian Keg.") It'd be nice to be able to get bulk grains, beans and sugar without having to drive outta town too far.

Quit off topic misdirection, there used to be a bulk food store in the basement of the Unitarian church ages ago. I'm guessing by now it's long gone. I used to buy flour, rice, eggs, pasta, and other bulk items there when I lived in Meadville.  I don't know if they relocated, went under or just gave up on the idea.

As far as what kind of eatery could be put there... I'm sure the possibilities are only limited by the space and what the community would accept and patronize.

Kinda off topic here but Life, does the Market House still sell the whole grains and other "bulk" foods?   I remember last summer seeing the shelves stocked with all kinds of food items.

Well, I went to Sandy's today.....everyone was sad and moping around but it was hush-hush.   The deli was emptied out, the staff were boxing stuff up and cleaning the place, the lottery machines were empty.

I do believe what I heard was true.   SAD but TRUE :(

I mean "BULK" like 50 pound bags of dry goods. I've seen a lot of containers of things - but nothing huge. I wants to keep storing things. Despite the 'turnaround' the economy is supposedly going to have by Bernanke continued fiddling around - I think the more things 'in store' I have at home - the better. The market house does have some things though.

Saw the Sandy's thing in the paper. Glad the gas station is staying open. I'm sure thay'll find a buyer for it. That's a hot location for a business.

Have you checked into Cloverdale Bulk  Foods in Cambridge Springs Life?

Their phone number is 398-1926‎. I don't know what they have, but a call might be in order if you haven't checked them out.

There's also Millers in Centerville: 814-587-6051
Ginny's Bulk Foods in Linesville:  814-683-1006
Finneys in Cambridge Springs:  (814) 398-9222

I'm sure you've probably found all of these but I'm just putting them out there.

Is that Amish bulk store on Pettis Road still open?   Also there is an Amish place on Rt 27 heading out of Meadville where they sell lots of plants and wood finished products.  I know they have a small store inside but not sure what they sell.

The place on Pettis is OK. They have some good size bags of oatmeal and sugar. The store in Atlantic is nice - but I don't know if she's still open. (Got a great deal on sugar there. Still working through a 50lb. bag. The flour prices were OK - but feed wheat is still cheaper and stores better.) We get feed wheat from Meadville Farm and Garden - but I wanna shop around. Will have to check the place in Conneautville down by the tracks.

There's a few scratch and dent places around too. We got some good deals over in Ohio a little past Andover last summer. The bags of pasta lasted about 9 months. (And they were CHEAP!) Gotta get back over there - - - maybe this weekend!

Life, the lady in Atlantic is still open.   If you head out that way, there is an Amish scratch 'n dent right down the road from her that has flour, potatoes and such.  Lots of things.   I'll price some basics for ya when I'm down there next time.

You all might be quite surprised to know what Ms. P. has been up to .... hopefully, good news to follow soon....

Had a mighty busy weekend....saturday night was insane....I was exhausted on sunday....never even left the loveshack!

Lock, Billy shot pool for our team for about 4 yrs, now he is on our sub list ... you're right, he's quite a player. He also brings my husband and I special treats.....always something delicious. He stops in often for happy hour....you might try to catch him sometime when you get back to the area.

Cindy.....yes, Katie does work for me....she is the very first bartender I ever hired back in 2002....she has adopted my husband and i as her extended family...she's a blessing to have behind the bar.

Wowzers ~ did anyone happen to drive past Sandy's yesterday?   I think they needed the police force out to help with the traffic.   The line of people waiting to get into the door was 100 or so deep and the line wrapped around to the back of the store.  This was around noonish.

I drove back around that area around 2-ish and the line was still wrapped around to the side of the building.

When I was in the store on Sunday, there was barely anything left so not sure what all these folks were hoping to snap up at 1/2 off.

I'm still very sad about this ~ Meadville sure is losing a lot of cool places.   I used to shop at Hunters Newsstand on Chestnut - they shut down.  Now Sandys  :(
