New Post Office Rule
« on: May 30, 2009, 05:08:08 PM »
That absolutely STINKS.......just another reason to not do your job.

I don't get much mail delivered during the week but there are times I have outgoing mail that the mail carrier needs to pick up but here is where this new law comes in.

If you don't have mail being delivered that particular day, have mail in your box that needs picked up, the carrier does not have to walk up to your house and collect it  >:(

Just this week alone I had to drive down to the post office to drop off my mail because the mail carrier walked past my house because I didn't have mail to be delivered.   I even had my mail sticking out of the box but he just kept on walking.

I paid a visit to the post master yesterday and he told me due to economy that they no longer have to stop by our house to pick up our mail.   This just makes me livid and is such a stupid rule.

Hey now!!!! We buy the damned stamps to put on our outgoing mail but they won't pick it up?  >:(  It will all be ironed out when the revolution finally comes down. They sure don't mind delivering all my junk mail to me.
This is a crock Foodie. Thanks for telling us. :)

Kinda funny that now we have almost instant communication the USPS even stays open at all. All I get is bills, junk and movies from Netflix. The USPS is trying to position themselves to compete with FexEx and UPS. Great rates but they don't have the tracking service or guarantees to go with it.

It does seem kind of silly though not stopping. I wonder if that applies to the walking routes as well?

I live in the city and on a walking route.....I have a sun porch with a mail slot....remember those?   Well, its not hard to see my mail sticking out of the slot but they are not required to stop and pick it up if you don't have mail to be delivered.

This is what is ticking me off.   I guess this applies to those mailboxes with the red flags as well.   If your flag is up but you aren't getting mail, they don't have to stop.

This is a way to cut routes and hours put in.   I imagine the USPS won't be in business for long with stupid rules like this.   Honestly, this will only make it worse because now I won't be buying stamps like I do.   I will find alternative ways to pay my bills and send mail.    The heck with them.

With on line bill paying and other methods of sending packages - you could do it. They're still the cheapest though. (Which amazes me cuz they are a quasi-governmental agency.)

Mail's gonna be $50 a letter before too long.

I just talked to a friend who delivers mail in Indiana and its a rule there too but she said this only applies to people in the city and those living on the walking routes.   The rural routes will still stop at your box if your flag is up and you are not getting mail that day.

It's still a stupid rule because my mail is very visible sticking out my box and I just don't see why they can't pick it it.....just being lazy.

Maybe we should just get some hooks and hang our mail in a bag like the railroads used to do. I bet Lock know how to rig something like that up.

How funny would this be:   I have a spare shepherd's hook in the garage.....maybe I will stick it next to the sidewalk and hang the mail from there.....think they would take it then??

I still can't believe they will walk past a house that has mail visible in a box just because that resident isn't getting mail that day.......buncha baloney!

This is NOT a new rule. This has been in the manual for many many decades. The Post Office is required to DELIVER your mail. If you live close to a PO or a mail drop, you can drop your mail there or put it in your mailbox and IF you have any mail to be delivered to your house that day, the Carrier will take it... after all he or she has to be at your recepticle anyway. But..if he/she has no mail to DELIVER to you..no reason to go to your recepticle..... If they do pick it up with no mail... they are doing something extra for you....Kinda like a "Baker's Dozen"

Now... difference between city carriers and your rurals.... Different union/regulations.... Use to be even the Rural Carriers could sell stamps and such from the vehicle and I think that has changed because you can send in an order form for free ( no stamp needed) to have stamps delivered. They do stop to pick up the mail because of distance to a PO or mail drop. If you really wanted to know this, you could have asked or called the Post Master before posting it in here.

And no, I am not a Post Master.... but I am retired from the Postal Service.

I can still buy stamps from our carrier. I don't think we're that rural where I live. When I lived in Alaska, that was rural. Anytime your address is a mile-marker you know you're in the sticks. That being said, I did not know that detail Lifetime.
