It is a shame that our OWN Newspaper doesn't do their Juliet Oscar Bravo and post warnings to those who go beyond the pale and won't suspend or worse yet.... eliminate members on an individual basis. Now they eliminated EVERYONE from a place people go to or opinions on local and national subjects.
 
If this turns out to be a decent forum, I will contact people whom I know that use the forums for information but have not joined them for their own reasons. Believe me.... there are many and they hold various positions within the Shenango Valley. They treated the Herald Site like a place to feel the pulse of people in the area that isn't guided by the typed/spoken word of the media.
 
We have lost so much because of actions like the Herald and the New Castle News has taken. They want to sell papers but don't wan people remarking on their stories and those in our daily life. Hmmmm sounds familiar. I know there are limits.... but... you can't complain to police about someone playing music...just as to HOW LOUD and annoying (time ) it is to play. But...those of us who enjoy music can still play it... within reason. The Herald/NC News figures "NO SOUP FOR ANYONE!!!!". Life goes on and ideas and discussions find a way.
 
We have become such a litigious society we are afraid to pass gas for fear of a lawsuit. BOO!!!!!!!scared you huh? OMG please don't sue me...
 
This is the 4th of July and we have become what we tried to leave behind at the cost of a War.... We now are embracing what we escaped centuries ago.... God Help Us All!!!!!!!

The folks that have been here a long time all seem to have some odd serenditipous thing going on and nothing ever gets too controversial - but that's not to say we haven't had some decent debates. I'm hoping more of the folks frequenting that forum make it over here and start posting a lot. The fellow in charge (Nightmare Patrol) is a good dude and isn't into the whole censorship thing - but I get the feeling that if folks get too rude, he'll do what's right and necessary. (His ball and playground. Besdies - he's like - some computer wizard or something and might just be able to reach through a screen and slap someone if necessary.)

There is no auto censoring here. So yes, if you search for a bad word you'll find a few. I let those slide because sometimes they are just part of normal expression. To date we have never had any overly gratuitous use of umm... "colorful phraseology" here. I deal with things on a case by case basis.

I can't reach through a screen and slap anyone either. I am however, in the IT business to put a roof over my head and feed the family though.

You'll find this place is well worth the effort.  Hell, they put up with me.  When I moved to the area 2 years ago, the folks on this board, a whole whopping 6 active posters at that time were my lifeline.  I knew NO ONE.  Knew NOTHING of the area.  They helped with it all.  Finding out who to contact for utilities, for schools, for docs, you name it.  When things went bad and good, they are there. 
 
You wont get censorship.  I have yet to see that.  Its a very tasteful board though.  Granted, things can get "adult oriented" but hey, Who gives a furry rodent's behind as long as no one really is being hurt in the process?
 
Oh and NP?  Get the freaking cam out of my closet!  I saw you sneak in there and install in you sneaky ninja!

No, we have lost so much apparently because of the way-out-of-line behavior of a handful of (guest) users. Heck, someone complaining last week about the missing Sharon forum posted a bush photo with the F word in it in the meadvile forum. And anyone wonders why papers keep pulling the plug?

Especially in the case of the new castle forum, it's unrealistic for a company to need to assign a 24-hour babysitter to a service that probably brings in just a few cents a day in banner click-throughs.

I get the impression that the local admins may have the ability to delete or modify a post but that the overall account registration and management was handled at some central local by super admins or even by an outside Groupee software vendor. So banning someone probably involved going through a couple layers of outside administrators, which was probably more of a headache than just letting some of it go.

i think a good example of the whack-a-mole problem was that jerk that kept signing up under different names and flooding dozens of topics at various cities' forums trying to recruit users to his UnknownZone forum. (Irony: If you tried to sign up for that forum with anything but a hard, ISP e-mail account, you couldn't get in. They didn't want the riff-raff and spam that comes with hotmail and yahoo accounts -- yet that's what they were doing to the groupee forums)

I can't see how the forums ever sold a single extra paper. If anything, it was clear most forum members were non-subscribers when they started posting stories later and later. Major stories that people were talking about in diners at 7 that morning wouldn't get a single forum comment until, coincidentally, minutes after the story appeared online for free hours later. Hmmm.

I never use mu ISP email for accounts. Not even Hey Martha 9but that was 2005 when I registered - so maybe they let it slide back then.) And you're right - I think most forum users are not subscribers. The revenue for CNHI in the forums has nothing to do with selling papers - it's a pop up ad thing. I think the Meadville Tribune has kept up their forum for as long as it has because it's been pretty active and the CLP Thread has over 800K hits I believe. Not that it's been without controversy or trolls though . . . .
