Going potty in Hermitage
« on: July 08, 2009, 08:06:23 AM »
I saw this article in the Herald about the Hornets stadium and the number of bathrooms proposed for it and the subsequent reduction thereof. Just how many people does this stadium hold?

You can look at this story a few ways:

-- Maybe the architect is misinterpreting the code, which is brand new. Unlikely, though; they're professionals and ought to know (or would have double-checked with the state Labor and Industry dept.)

-- The number of fixtures probably is set as a ratio of people to potties, apparently around 100:1. A city code inspector goes so far as suggesting that the code is great for a PNC Park or Heinz Field but there isn't that kind of need at a high school stadium.

Oh, really? Other than the beer factor, large gatherings of local sports fans have the same biological needs and inclination to converge on the bathrooms at key moments like halftime or after a game.

-- While other branches of city government are going out of their way to set standards and enforce them over things like parking, traffic, stormwater runoff, landscaping and the quality of building materials, the zoning appeals board caved in within a heartbeat and let the school district -- a sister government entity -- to install only 1/3 as many fixtures as the building code requires.

Not a couple fewer potties, TWO THIRDS less.

It sets a nasty precedent. What inconvenient code requirement will the next commerical developer ask to get out of? Fewer fire exits? No sprinklers? Thinner steel beams? What's the point of a strong building code if the city arbitrarily waves it?

I went to Woodstock in '94. they didn't have enough potties. Large numbers of people and not enough potties is a bad thing. Let's just say it wasn't peace and love I was smellin' in the air . . .

Maybe they can develop a Crap and Trade systemat the park wherein you're only allowed one trip to the restroom per ticket stub, but if you buy an additiional stub from someone else . . . well, you know.

How big is the stadium though? Granted they need to have adequate "relief stations" but I was just trying to figure out the ratio of bladders and bowels to bowls and urinals.  :P
