Jayhawk, we must be on the same wavelength.   Numerous times I've went to post something only to find you've posted the exact same thing I was thinking.

Scary indeed. Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen us together in the same room at the same time? I don't think i have. Hmmm.

Hi all,

First of all, if I have forgotten to welcome anyone from the Herald forum consider yourself welcomed.

As the only Mercer County poster on this particular forum for months and months There are a few points I would like to make.

When I came here, this forum was basically a Crawford County forum. All of the members with the high post counts either live in the Meadville area or came from there. I was contacted about mirroring my blog here. I joined and liked it very much.

In time, Nightmare Patrol was gracious enough to expand things to include the counties that border Crawford. That is where the Mercer County board came from. Both NP and I mentioned it several times on the Herald Forum as an alternative to the nastiness, but got no takers. NP has the patience of a saint, I would have closed down the no activity boards months ago... :o

So then the Herald shuts down their forum, and this site has taken up some of the slack for some of the members. The counties are divided, the towns and cities are divided which is convenient if you want to discuss something strictly local. If you look at the topic and post counts in the categories in the "unclassified" section, you will find that this is where the lion's share of discussions take place. Please do not limit yourselves to the Sharon board, its like having a mansion and only living in one room.

Finally, each major division on the site is easily hidden by clicking on the arrow to the right or left of the banner. This will eliminate some of the clutter and confusion the site may cause.

By sticking with the Mercer County section NP has given us a fine place to come and talk when the Forum experience ended for us (some earlier than others... ;) ). He is doing it on his dime and works very hard to make sure it a place that is an enjoyable, and respectable place to swap opinions.

I, personally, would not have him change a thing.

Hope you all enjoy your visits here, continue posting and get the word out about the site!

This is already a marked improvement over the Herald's forum.  So far, everyone's been really cool, and not gotten into personal or political diatribes, and the overall tone is very pleasant.  Just being able to quickly check new replies to my posts, and unread posts since my last visit is great when I'm at work (oops!) or in a hurry.  As a former Mercer Countian, but living close enough to visit family once every couple of months, it's great to be able to keep up with the goings-on back home.  Let's keep the good vibe going, and invite some friends over!

I know I haven't been around long, but I think I have to vote NAY on the news feeds.  Frankly, one of the reasons why the vibe is so nice here is that it's free of the "if it bleeds, it leads" muck that is shoved down our throats on a daily basis anyway.  I worry that bringing in the headlines will just encourage the idiotic attacks, ridiculous blanket statements and cut-and-run trolls that brought down the Herald forums in the first place.  People who want the news know where to find it, and I can guarantee that if an item there is truly worth comment, it will find its way here.  In the meantime, I suspect there are a lot of us here who enjoy discussing things that aren't necessarily salacious enough to make the front pages.  ;)

Then I guess those of us who do follow the daily local and national news should leave now or forever hold their peace??? I went through this site and links.... news and the discussion of such IS a part of the Forums. I thought we were allowed to discuss these items, especially in our locale.

Now I am thinking, maybe this isn't where I should settle. I was part of the Herald forums and yes..a member of the "If It Bleeds, It Leads" Club. That, my friends, is how the news is prepared... Newspapers don't "Print the news".... THEY SELL NEWSPAPERS.

If I am not welcome to express my thoughts in here folks....and I am limited to what I can type, short of an attack on another as a first strike, tell me now I am in the wrong rooms.

If you say I am, it was nice to know you all and maybe we will see each other again sometimes in the future.

This is very much a community discussion forum. Local news is a part of what makes up life where you live.  Discuss away.

JimV, were you the local blogger from Sharon? Are you still operating the blog?

for the time  i have been here we have had a wide variety of discussions. there are many viewpoints represented here as well. several differing political stripes as well.  debate can be lively, and differing viewpoints clash. near as i can tell, tolerance does not mean accepting all ideas, but likely means having common respect for those persons who hold differing viewpoints than ourselves.

i believe the main reason we have not had meltdowns, disrespectful behavior and the like is because everyone has made an concerted effort not to do so.  it is really great to have a place to debate issues. and we do that here, we also fool around and joke about meaningless stuff too. (try not to hold that against us  :D )  respectful communications it is a team effort, it is what we make it i guess, that is what i was trying to say.

i really hope you all decide to "stick it out" and get to know us all a little better. this forum has wide open fields, plenty of room for "shoots" to take off in all directions of interest. in time you will get more of your hometown folks here and you will feel more at home.

Look, I have absolutely NO problem with news-based discussions, like the ones further down on the Sharon page.  I just don't feel that the news headlines--from the Herald or any other source--need to DOMINATE the forum via a feed.  I get the print Herald; many others read it online and know what's going on.  If there's a headline that you feel is worth talking about, by all means post away!  I know I will be, as soon as I have time to do so.

Guilty.  ;)  I took the blog down several months ago, for time and personal reasons, but I plan to do a lot of blog-like posting here!

I prefer differing viewpoints and lively discussion . . . keeps me nimble and teaches me new things that i may not have considered.

Debate is debate - I think there oughta be more of it. So - as far as news goes, local or national (though what happens in Sharon ain't of too much import to me - unless it applies elsewhere too) fire away.
