The Sharon postcard post did fairly well at starting some conversation, I thought I would throw up another recent acquisition.

This is a hutchinson soda bottle from Star Bottling in South Sharon Pa, later to become Farrell. I have read differing reports on the actual date the municipal name change took place, but I was very happy to pick the bottle up at a decent price.

The carbonation inside the bottle caused the odd stopper to rise and seal the bottle. When you pused the wire down to pour the contents, it made an audible popping noise.

Thus the term "pop bottle" and "pop" in general.

That's a nice looking bottle! When I deconstructed several smaller houses behind mine, I found several old Coca cola bottles made in Sharon that have a Star of David on them. They were shoved into holes in the basement (who knows when) by likely the construction workers.

my dad and his dad were mason contractors, (new castle originally) and my grandfather had a tradition of putting a silver dollar under the mantle in the mortar when building a fireplace. my dad did this too. dad eventually went on to put a "#" on an obscure part of any stone fireplace he built. i am sure there are a few in the sharon area.

when i grew up i used to help dad and my brothers on a few jobs building block basements, and yes. we used to put all manner of pop bottles, cans, mcdonalds styrofoam cups, and miscellaneous debris down between the webs of the blocks...  cretins we were...  :D

I missed one on ebay about a year ago. If you ever decide to get rid of one, drop me a line. I would love to have one for my collection.

Hi bh!

When we were rebuilding the farmstead that I live in, we were always putting crushed beer cans and empty camel packs into the walls. We figured it was a treat for the next idiot who was stupid enough to gut this house and start from scratch...These days I don't smoke or drink at all.

We had a block of 2x4 named Studley that was a spacer for fast 16 inch on center wall studs. It was heavily decorated with black magic marker. We had to stud the walls vertically so Studley was a Godsend. We committed Studley, with much pomp and ceremony, into the last wall that we built and dry walled.

Let them figure that one out.

When we tore down a half ass, half completed addition to this place shortly after purchase, one wall was completely filled with peanut shells, Reese Cup wrappers and Clark bar wrappers.....think someone liked peanut butter?  I was amazed.  I assume it took them alooooong time to get that thing up from the sheer volume of debris they shoved in there!
