Beet Harvesting
Mr. Ripley:
Hi all,
Went out in the early evening hours and harvested probably about 8 quarts of beets. We have been using the greens for several weeks now, and had some young beets with our sweet peas when they were ready. I have two pots boiling them now, we will can them tomorrow.
Our experiment with starting everything from seed has been a huge success as far as I can tell. I have not gotten an edible tomato yet, but have the stoutest tomato vines I have ever seen. Small green ones are starting to pop up all over the first ones planted.
For some reason our vine plants did not take off from seed, we ended up buying summer squash and zuchini plants. The potatoes are out of control, I should get well over 100lbs maybe as much as 200.
Sorry for rambling on like this, but we started this process in February and have worked and studied hard at it, it is just exciting seeing it come to fruition. :wahoo:
Thanks for reading,
Mr R

You must have planted a heck of a big garden! Happy to hear it's growing so nicely!

Every time I think of beets I keep going back to the book "Jitterbug Perfume"
Congrats on your harvest Mr R.
Mr. Ripley:
Thanks guys!
The garden ended up being about 30'x40'. It has kept me busy at a time when I need something to keep me busy. Mrs. R also has a minor jungle growing on the front porch. Lettuce, cherry tomato and many herbs are growing there. It has been quite a learning experience, and we should have quite a bit canned/dried/frozen for use this winter. Total investment on seed about $12, $6 of which went toward seed potato.
The next part of the experiment is harvesting viable seed for next year's garden...

Next year, I am planting my tomatoes upside down in five gallon buckets across my porch. My aunt has had wonderful success doing this and it will keep the pesky animals away.
