Rendell and Hermitage

I neglected to post my disgust with Rendell and the Hermitage school officials after reading this article. As I perused the statements of Superintendent Karen A. Ionta bemoaning the potential decrease in school funding if Rendell's ridiculous tax hike is not approved, I could not help to ask myself....gee, will this stop Hermitage from purchasing their Steinway grand piano. Heaven forbid that we the taxpayers in our fair state should decry a tax increase, portions of which will undoubtedly be used to bolster idiotic and unnecessary purchases such as that, as well as bolster the salaries of the teacher's union..err..I mean teachers.  Ahhh but Rendell knows who lines his own pockets as he lines theirs.

I don't know what a new Steinway grand runs, but I'm sure it's into five figures easily.

Hermitage had contracted to purchase one for 52,000 from an out of state (Ohio) dealer when they could have purchased a different and much less expensive make and model from a local company who had always been supportive of the school districts's needs in the past (e.g. loaning them pianos for free, etc.) Someone obviously had/has an agenda or sees the status of a Steinway as the only "appropriate" piano for their high school.
Cancel the order for that piano and you save a good portion of the expected "education funding" shortfall. I am sure there are other areas where Hermitage was equally profligate in their spending of taxpayer's money.

Wow!  That's a bit mind boggling.

I'm sure the local taxpayers don't want to hear of any teacher lay offs orprogram cuts when that amount could certainly pay for it!

while on the subject of that school district, as far as tradition and protocol go, i find it kind of odd that the school board will be naming an elementary school after the outgoing superintendent, who was only with the district 11 years (most as supt).

i don't know the woman or have close knowledge of her accomplishments, and maybe i'm old-fashioned. But i always believed in naming things after outstanding, longtime civic leaders or someone who has devoted decades to a cause -- generally old and gray or dead. For someone retiring after 8 years as superintendent, maybe a cake or a gold watch?

the mercer co. housing authority is even more notorious about naming housing projects after living people. It would make the most sense to enshrine the name of some individual who pulled himself up after growing up in the projects and made a name for himself and an example for others.

Instead, they name complexes mainly after members of the board of directors. Some indeed served decades, but others were middle-aged... maybe they had good attendance records. Twenty years ago a building in sharon was named after its then-young solicitor (i.e., hired lawyer) who was leaving for a career on the bench (he grew into deserving the honor, but at the time...)

I guess i put a greater value on the service and credentials of those the community chooses to honor.

No doubt it was political "payment" for her vociferous endorsement of Rendell's plan. I guess he figured there were no more political appointments he could give so he likely "suggested" the renaming instead as "payment".
Seriously though, your point is valid. Eleven years does not warrant an accolade of this magnitude.

Government workers, I mean employees, seem to think that they alone should be spared any economic pain during any economic downturn.

When pushed to cut spending, the bureaucrats cut the most visible and popular programs (e.g., closing parks) rather than make cuts in administrative staff.  As Mel Brooks said in Blazing Saddles:  "Gentlemen, we must protect or phony-baloney jobs."

EXACTLY!
Expect the same mentality if Obamacare becomes a reality...
(Future conversation)
Obamacare produced new bureaucrats:" We miscalculated the expense of the program; however we cannot sacrifice our government/union/bureaucrat jobs."

Cancer patient: "But I really need that chemotherapy"

Obamacare produced new bureaucrats: "NO SOUP FOR YOU!"

Is that an African or European hen? (never mind me folks)

Seriously though, they could get a Boston or Baldwin for a fraction of what a new Steinway costs, even with whatever school discounts they offer.

As Mel Brooks said in Blazing Saddles:  "Gentlemen, we must protect or phony-baloney jobs."

And that 'sprecisely how it's working in PA, or at least appears to be -- right down to revised interest in tolling I-80, not unlike the  tolls for the Gov. William J. Lepetomane Turnpike.

And i don't know the continent of origin of that henweigh, but see if it's capable of carrying a coconut, or perhaps whether the color helps ID it. It was blue. I mean green...
