I had a family member who did have an American Pit and Butch was great with my kid and the kids of the family members. He died ending a normal but mischevious life.... dragging deer carcasses into the yard that were VERY OLD  to his encounters with skunks, groundhogs and porcupines. His face was a mass of scars.

Now.... where I live.... drug dealers keep Pits and Rots tied up on their front porches in front of the door until a mark comes to purchase. I watch these dog "take their owners" for walks. I have come to realize that in my hood.... dogs like that, compensates for the size of certain body parts  ;) .

I have also seen several different "households" who mate their dogs.... inner bred and often and people come and either buy or trade the pups. The family trees of most of these dogs looks like a telephone pole. Police escort proper authorities to take the dogs after a complaint and "POOF" a week later you see 2 pups show up.

Granted.... there are MANY households with fine examples of these type of dogs, but..... all it takes is a child being mauled by one or more to set the events that we see.

Would I own one???? Not in this town or town period. Have I owned dogs ... yes... my last one died in my arms as he was poisoned by one of my long gone neighbors. He bled out at both ends in my arms... possibly rat poison. I have had cats, usual line up of rodents, fish, lizards and tarantulas.

It isn't the quality of the animal I am so worried about, as much as the quality of the owners. It is a shame that these kind of people are allowed to own a questionable animal for questionable use and yet THEY TOO are allowed to have children....  :o . Just my honest opinion....

I never though about a dog being a poor man replacement for a corvette. It's an interesting parallel though. Perhaps there a government grant in the stimulus package for you to do a study. (you may use the term "package" as a pun if you wish)

a few streets over there was a house that had 4 rotties crammed into it, a rental home. every time we took a walk and came near the place the dogs would rush to each window and lunge at the screens and try to eat us. large loud dogs they were, the same as the occupants of the house.( loud i mean) sometimes the dogs were chained outside on what appeared to be "logging chains" that reached about 5 inches from the sidewalk. it was obvious the owners of these dogs enjoyed the fact that people were intimidated by their dogs and encouraged this behavior.  we avoided this house for the most part.

on the other hand we had a next door neighbor, a marine that had a rottie that we "babysat" on many  occasions. this dog was bigger than me. that dog was behaved and trained. i also understand a respect for large dog breeds as i grew up with german shepards. i know dogs are animals and you must always respect that fact.

i understand what lifetime is saying i guess. sometimes people use pets like symbols, extensions of themselves or something like that i guess. if i am not mistaken, i think the way people treat animals, (if not the choice of a particular pet) can be  a window into a persons character.

Growing up we had a pug that lived to 16 years. She was blind, deaf and near toothless at the end, but she was a good dog.

i have two dogs with me now. one is a schnauzer-terrier female, 45 lbs., the other her son 50-55 lbs. she is the best dog i have ever had in my 48 yrs here on earth! dont need a leash, listens to voice commands immediately!  loves to play & is very lovable! all the nabors love her as well as my friends!! her son, well only 15 months but dont know the rest of his heritage as i couldnt catch the dad, but he is semi good. barks at strangers & loves to carry around ROCKS!!!!! he is proudest then, sticking his chest out while prancing around the yard, while on the chain.

First off I would NEVER own a Pit bull whether it be pure or mixed. They are just to unpredictable. Playful today and tomorrow would tear your arm off. I am a true Rottie lover. I have had 3 and all three were very gentle, Very playful  loved attention and especially loved other dogs. I never had any problems with them.

I have had my pitbull mix for 5 years now and he has never wavered personality-wise.  He is as docile as any animal I have known.  (And I have a farm full of them!)   I am sure being mixed with a Lab was helpful.  I have kids by the droves in and out of my place and he has never once ever indicated he wanted to harm any one.  I do wonder what his first yearoflife held however.  He WILL NOT get in a car without a great deal of fanfare.  That's not fun due to his size. And once you get him in he drools everyware!  Needless to say, he only gets a ride for an occasional vet visit and that's it.  I was not happy the humane society withheld his breed but now that I have had him this long without incident, my opinion has changed.  He is soooooooooo affectionate and eager to please.  Maybe his supposed killer instinct is fulfilled because he can kill rodents to his hearts content.....I think the groundhog population is up this year.......and I am thinking the near total freedom he has may have something to do with his overall level of happiness too. I recommend the Invisible Fence to anyone who will listen!  LOVE it!

We had a lab that constantly drooled and paced and licked the windows while traveling in the back of the truck. Some form of car sickness???
