Lots and lots of good sales online and free shipping, if you like to shop online. I do.

....already prepping for a camping trip out to Ft Jefferson next summer, 70 miles west of Key West pretty much way out there  in the middle of the beginning of the Gulf Stream; hopefully the oil situation will be contained by then :-\ ....

....already have a really nice 2-person backpacking tent that can tell some tales, only it requires using tent stakes to set up....

....so, was looking around for a satisfactory self-supporting light-weight 2-person tent as being a flat corral isle the small primitive camp ground at Ft Jefferson Natl Mon isn't exactly conducive to trying to pound tents pegs into the concrete-like ground; done that before- didn't do it so well :o ....

....did my diligent research to find what I wanted; it was $129.95 at the major big-box sporting goods stores; $124.00 over at the BX on base- some savings there, eh? ::) ; Dick's Sporting Goods had it for $119.99 w/ a factory $30 rebate....

....picked it up on Amazon.com for $70.99 and free shipping ;D ....

....I really like Amazon as there is usually a wealth of customer reviews on the product you are thinking about purchasing so you have a pretty fair idea what you are buying; plus their prices are usually the best.....

I rarely think about stores for stuff anymore. Can almost always do better online, particularly with free shipping. (Stores have shipping included.. lol)

We've had an amazon Christmas for the past 6 years now.  we keep an eye on what the kids want when we take them out. We sit down in one day and do the shopping online and usually save close to 50 percent. Not having to hit the stores is an added bonus too.

I've had much better luck with ordering online that you have, Ko. And I still shop locally; but when I factor in the cost of gas (as we have minimal shopping here in Madville), usually online with free shipping is cheapest. I'm thinking of soft goods although Anakin gets most of his computer stuff online.

Interestingly, we watched a talk by Thomas Friedman last night, given in '04 (I think) to MIT.  One of the things he talked about was "insourcing." Many online companies use UPS COMPLETELY for their sourcing - stocking, picking, packaging and delivering.

The World Is Flat by Friedman is next on my reading list.

I still like the instant gratification of shopping and going home with the goods, same day.

I like the "shop" too.... walking, seeing people, trying on clothes, feeling the fabric, and driving to the stores. It's "hunting and gathering" for me.

I do buy a lot of clothes and other things online, but I still enjoy a day of good old-fashioned shopping.

Like I said, we have limited shopping here in Madville.  Erie/Grove City do not miss my $ because I rarely go there anyway, several times a year. Last year when I was out of commission twice (broken leg and H1N1) I think Giant Eagle, WalMart and a few other places probably missed my $ a lot!!

The brick and mortar stores would then turn into warehouses for the online stores so the people who worked in those B&M stores would have warehouse or delivery jobs?

Ko-Shin: The online stores concept needs back end people to drive the website, innovate, run numbers, etc. It's probably a wash as far as employees are concerned and the salaries are quite a bit better for those positions. There are also a LOT of regional distribution centers that hold a lot of this stock so stock gets delivered within a few days.
A lot of entrepeneurs run it like a family business too, with nephews and nieces pitching in to do the technical stuff.
Most retail is temporary - no benefit stuff anyway, except for the owner which has increasingly become a faceless corporation.
Amazon is a good example: I can find stuff there I CAN'T find no matter how many stores I go to, and it's usually from an actual brick and mortar store that is trying to get rid of backstock.
The internet just opens up the possibilities.

So in summary (LOL) I think that internet shopping actualy ENCOURAGES small business with it's low overhead. Now THAT'S conservative/Republican/Libertarian...right  ;)

Here is a good pennypincher topic.  I went to the casino today for the first time.  Spent $10.  Had a very nice lunch with my daughter, but all the time I was there I couldn't help but think "a fool and his money soon parted."  Glad to go, didn't stay long and I don't think I will go again.

*hijacked from the Obama thread...*

(being grocery snobs who totally fall for the sneaky marketing of every-other-week bogo sales).

We totally live off those BOGO sales. I think they go in somewhat of a 3 month rotation because we stock up on one thing every 3-4 months or so. Like mayonnaise. Right before we run out the sale pops up.
I just picked up 32oz Powerade for 88c a bottle, with "buy 10 get 5 free" coupons, I used 3 coupons and got 45 bottles for $26.40, or 58.67c a piece. In this hot humid weather, we suck those bad boys down in a hurry! The kids drink that instead of pop. They are outside a lot and need the electrolyte replacement, and Powerade doesn't have the sugar regular Gatorade has...
Hey, I used to work at Winn Dixie, it holds a special place in my heart. I don't shop there either anymore  :'(
