New businesses in Sharon
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:02:53 PM »
I thought it would be nice to take a break from the economic gloom and doom and list a few businesses that have opened their doors in Sharon in recent months, or are planning to open soon.

(I suppose the gloom-and-doomers will point out that some of these businesses are not brand-new, but rather relocated into the city from another local community.  I would argue, though, that any time a business VOLUNTARILY moves into the city, it sends a strong positive message and sure beats the heck out of further eastward sprawl.)

ALREADY OPEN
*Shenango Valley Meats, 1215 E. State St.
*Market City Bistro, 869 E. State St.
*Someplace Else (sandwich shop), 48 S. Water Ave.
*Tri-City Collision, 1361 E. State St.
*Sharon Speed Check, Silver St. and N. Water Ave. (first downtown gas station in years)

OPENING SOON
*Splitstone Entertainment, W. State and N. Main sts.
*Hot Spot, 505 E. State St. (former Sheetz)
*Sharon Pharmacy, 197 E. Silver St. (in the Sharon Medical Group building)
*Ianazone's Pizza, 10 W. State St.

OTHER RECENT HAPPENINGS
*Expansion of Crosstex's Sharon facility
*Ongoing expansion project involving Clepper Manor/Nugent Group
*Repurposing of the Rosemont building to house Laurel Technical Institute--recent Business Journal article hinted that future expansions are already being planned
*Planned expansion of Precision Manufacturing Institute to house welding program
*Site prep work appears to FINALLY be starting (after many months of sewer delays) for the 8-story Lofts at Centre City building across from Penn State Shenango

Yes, I realize that a handful of new businesses and planned projects does not a boomtown make, but it's better than nothing, right?

JimV, thank you for the update! My wife was excited when we drove past the Ianazone's pizza place next to Winner's. She remembered it from her school days in Sharpsville and that it was good pizza.

BTW I wonder if Precision Manufacturing Institute would have classes for people extrinsic to the school (such as myself) to learn basic welding skills. I would be interested in picking up that useful bit of knowledge. A short night class would be ideal.

Good to see some good news coming out of the Valley for once.  I'll be back in the Valley in a couple of weeks and look forward to taking a look.

I'm pretty sure that anyone can sign up for a class at PMI--provided that an opening is available--and that the hours are usually accommodating.  PMI-Sharon doesn't offer welding at its building yet (it may teach off-site), but hopefully that will soon change (the Herald has stated that the school is looking for $500,000 to put up an addition to their building to house a welding program).

So you could expand your skills into the field of inspecting X-rays of construction welds? (Actually, that would be a natural extension for you.)

More likely to do continual repairs on my fence as it no doubt rusts over time (Yeah, just what I need, another to-do task).

.....I wonder how much xray inspection of welds pays on the side?!?

Maybe Sharon will use the increased tax revenue from these new businesses to do some basic street maintenance!

How bout that Silver St.?  It's one fourth dirt road!

Ok, give me the skinny on the new mexican resturant in the old Chi Chi's building.

I hear it is better than La Isla and Compadres.

Anybody care to share?

It was just dug up for utility purposes last week.  The company will repair it--at least, they did when similar work took place on my street last year.

Compadres rocks.  They seem to be opening all over the place.  There are two in Meadville now.  There is one in Grove City.   Hope you guys get one.
