Allegheny gets some good press

Nationally Ranked Allegheny College Rises in Annual “U.S. News” Report

MEADVILLE, Pa., – August 20, 2009 – “U.S. News and World Report” has named Allegheny College as a top-10 “Up-and-Coming” liberal arts college and ranked it No. 85 of the 266 best liberal arts colleges in the nation, up from No. 94 in last year’s report.

In “Keep an Eye on These Schools,” U.S. News asked experts in higher education to identify colleges making “striking improvements or innovations – schools everyone should be watching.”

Only two colleges in Pennsylvania—Dickinson and Allegheny—were included in the report’s national liberal arts category. Gannon University was also identified in the “Up-and-Coming” list in the regional master’s university category.

“We are pleased to see that Allegheny’s national profile continues to rise and, further, that our peers once again have recognized the College’s efforts to develop innovative ways to deliver the best possible experience to our students,” said Allegheny College Vice President for Enrollment and Communications Scott Friedhoff.

Allegheny College is featured in numerous national guidebooks including Loren Pope’s “Colleges That Change Lives,” “Harvard Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College That Is Best for You,” The Princeton Review’s “The Best 371 Colleges,” Peterson’s “Competitive Colleges,” “The Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character Development,” “Rugg’s Recommendations on the Colleges,” “The Fiske Guide to Colleges” and others.

“Unfortunately rankings can be confusing, especially when it comes to understanding the categories,” explained Friedhoff.

This year, as in past years, Allegheny College is categorized as one of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges. U.S. News categorized 266 colleges from among more than 3,500 institutions of higher education in the United States as the “Best Liberal Arts Colleges.” The publication has other categories, including “Best National Universities,” “Best Universities—Master’s (by region),” and “Best Comprehensive Colleges—Bachelor’s (by region).”

“While college guides provide easily accessible information, and some are better than others, there is no substitute for visiting campuses in order to find the college that’s best for an individual student,” added Friedhoff.

Founded in 1815, Allegheny College is a selective college of the liberal arts and sciences in northwestern Pennsylvania where 2,100 students with unusual combinations of interests, skills and talents excel.

Right there in the heart of...uh...Meadville.  Imagine that.

Have to say, my kids have participated in many of their summer day camps and they are the excellent.  My oldest took singing lessons there too.  You can have a gym membership (which gives you pool priveledges) there.  There is a lot to take advantage of that a lot of people don't know about.   I don't know how to get one, but if you can get their public newletters sent to your house.  They tell you what's going on.  Free lectures, free concerts, etc.  We get it cause we have done stuff there.  Or check thier website maybe.

Actually the college appears to be expanding in a generally northward direction. I believe they have their eyes set on owning everything between Highland and Park Ave South of Limber/Allegheny for the short term. I would not he surprised if the eventual goal was to acquire property that would make it all Allegheny property to connect the athletic facilities further north on Park Ave. That's the 20 year plan though I'm guessing.

That's a pretty lofty goal.  There are a lot of homes in that area.

Why is a Liberal Arts education good for you?

Of course - if you don't know "how" to think by the time you're in college, there's a problem . . . .

That's a common snag that plagues the workforce at all levels. If you can't think on your own then you're on an island no matter how much education you get.

Before long I think this industry may own Meadville or at least the Northern Sector...

For the moment they have all the real estate they need. Any  movement further north would require some serious rezoning. It's possible and I'm sure they would love to be able to do that but there's lots of things that wold have to be done. It's at least 20 years down the road.

I worked in a department up there that dealt with a lot of alumni... trust me, if they want something, they have the money to grease the wheels.
Look who they are up against, Meadville City Council?
The Shiney One?
Allegheny does as it pleases, when their portfolios rebound, look for more action. Most of the buildings were paid for by alumni. COMPLETELY. Give Allegheny credit, their grads do VERY well in society.
They do try to give back to the community but the powers that be in Meadville won't accept the help.
*off soap box*

Allegheny is one of the best things to happen to Meadville.
