Great to see this much-needed project taking shape.  Here's to hoping it will set the stage for continued economic development in that area!

the need isn't so much for economic development as it is to make a safe and visually welcoming thoroughfare for one of the most-used entrances to the Shenango Valley and specifically Sharon.

A lot has been done in farrell already with demolishing vacant and rundown buildings, rusting mill structures, and adding a flank of greenery at the wheatland curve.

Now if someone can only think of enhance the cluttered and odorous penn-ohio portal.

Sharon isn't the only town in the region with ugly entrances, and those who have them sure offer a bad first impression for visitors.

I agree--the way I look at it, economic development and aesthetics go hand-in-hand.  If the corridor becomes "safe and visually welcoming," businesses will be more likely to give it a second glance.

As for the cluttered and odorous Penn-Ohio portal, I believe the new bridges will be a HUGE improvement.

Is it really worse than entering Meadville and crossing the Smock Bridge only to see the sewage treatment plant?

Haha actually...if you're coming into Sharon from Ohio on Rt. 62 (which you can't do at the present time because of ongoing bridge replacements), one of the very first sights beyond the PA border is the city treatment plant!

Meadville and Sharon must be "sister cities"...

That's right: Sights AND smells (although i hope $30 or $40 million in improvements will fix the problem.)

Something that Sharon needs to do is clean up the downtown area. Start with the trees , remove the dead and prune the living and maybe get some of the businesses add planters. I heard a rumor last year that there was going to be a beautification organization started but have not seen nor heard anything since. Does anyone know if it was started? BTW, Grok your place looks great. It would be nice to see other Sharon residents and business owners follow your example.

I contend that it presents a nasty image to have...

-- a dingy, unlit core block of east state street downtown between chestnut and sharpsville avenue (while shenango and chestnut avenues are so bright they can be seen from space).

-- Dead linden trees and dead or damaged decorative street lamps dotting the downtown; for several years there has been a traffic cone duct-taped to the wiring stump on state street outside the library.

-- And we might as well change the school mascot to the Orange Sawhorses, what with so many throughout town perpetually guarding collapsed catch basins.

-- And the relatively new clock across from the library is never right, and someone stole a letter from the "welcome to sharon" sign there, only to have it replaced by a letter not even close to the font of the others.

Thank you Bluebomber! My wife and I are firm believers that it is best to spend our money on something we enjoy which for us is our home. We are really looking forward to putting up our pillars and ornate capitals (that we salvaged from the mansion we deconstructed down the block)  on the front porch with accompanying railings to complete the look for the front of our house. We also have a hand carved ornate half circle structure that we will place over our large front window which used to be above the third floor window on said deconstructed mansion. Alas, I wish I had no need of sleep so I could accomplish all these things in a timelier manner.

Last I checked, Streetscape money had been secured to replace all the lighting along E. State with new fixtures similar to those along Shenango (presumably so that it will also be capable of being seen from space).  I'm not sure when that project is set to begin, though.

And bluebomber (welcome by the way, good to have another local voice)--there is indeed a beautification commission in the city and they have done good work.  Money, of course, is always the linchpin though.

Not sure; its membership is listed here but there may have been some changes since this list was posted (for example, I think Carol Swartz resigned and was replaced).  Wish I could be more helpful than that!  Perhaps calling the city building would get you headed in the right direction.
