Good news!
I believe I found the owner of the Yellow Lab. Got a phone call just a bit ago from the ad in the paper, and the woman described her perfectly. We'll know more tonight when she comes to pick her up. You can see this dog has been taken care of so I'm happy her people may have found her and want her back.
She's such a sweetie that it will be sad to see her go.

Now... if we would just get a call on Scooter.

That's good news.

It's strange with all the near sightings of Scooter that he hasn't been found....or that he never scooted on home.

From Dogs Deserve Better at www.dogsdeservebetter.org

Snowmegeddon, a nickname given to the recent blast of snow storms hitting the east coast, has it's share of human victims, but the weather's forgotten victims suffer silent and often deadly fates: America's chained and penned dogs. Unable to escape their tether or pen to find appropriate shelter as they would do in the wild, they await the mercy of humans, humans for whom mercy is not high on the list of priorities.

Overwhelmed with anywhere from 20-35 inches of snow, the region's residents dig out their cars, their homes, and their driveways, but repeatedly leave their chained dogs to fend for themselves. Doghouses become buried in the snow, not even visible as the lawn ornaments they once were.

"Anyone who leaves his/her dog chained or penned out in the severe winter weather with two feet of snow, below zero wind chills, and temperatures in the single digits should be convicted without question of animal cruelty," says Tamira Ci Thayne, founder and CEO of Dogs Deserve Better, a nonprofit working to bring dogs into the home and family.

The nonprofit gets hundreds of heartbreaking e-mails during periods of inclement weather. Emails such as this one from Virginia: "Last month they didn't dig the dog out from his house for three days, no food either. When I returned to the property today there were no tracks in the yard. The dog had wrapped himself around another stilt causing him to have no room to move, get to food, nothing. Another neighbor came and dug out the doghouse."

Or this report, from West Virginia: "Rotties are tied up behind a house with no food or water for four days now. I sent animal control and when they knocked on the door, a 75-year-old lady in a walker answered and said she can't get out back to take care of them. Apparently her family stops by once in a while to give them some food or water. But with the snow they haven't been there in some time."

This scenario repeats itself in towns all across our nation, as dogs await better laws which will protect them from both the cruelties of man and freezing temperatures. As winter storms ravage the country, bringing below-zero wind chills and arctic temperatures in many areas, dogs hold on as best they can. Those that freeze to death are rarely reported, quickly disposed of by owners looking to avoid legal consequences for their failure to properly care for their pets.

Dogs Deserve Better, needs your help to stop the suffering of these dogs in the cold during this horrible winter.

It can be done. One town, one city at a time of need be.

Amazingly enough we have the Director of the Crawford County Humane Society on our City Council, and he has been sitting there for years. Sitting and sitting.... and sitting....

....and sitting.

Hooray! A happy ending.

The Lab's owner came and got her just minutes ago. Her name is Daisy, she is 7 years old, and she was so happy to see her mom! Big kisses and waggy tail, and such excitement! Mom and "daughter" are on their way home now.

You could tell how well cared for this dog is, and I am so glad that this is a happy ending for her. I know you can't win them all, but when you do ...it's sweet.

Seriously, it was precious.

Daisy was so happy. That she went back and forth between her mom and me was likely her way of telling her mom the story, or saying thanks. I sent her home with a goodie bag of treats and a hug.

She was such a nice dog, I will really miss her.

The Dane is adjusting really well. He is laying here licking his paws right now. I am glad he joined our family.

The rescue has been great as well, doing follow up calls to make sure all is going well. They want to know how the family is doing, listen for any frazzled stress in your voice, barking in the background, etc, as they chat. I am really impressed by this group and their care for the dogs they place.

Sometimes people don't know what they're getting into when they adopt a large breed. This morning I made them some eggs to go in their food, and he can stand right there at the stove and watch everything you are doing. If you're not careful he could get burned, or some dogs will steal out of the pans, again getting burned.

They "counter surf" for treats. It's eye level to them, so they see it as fair game. So, you have to be careful not to leave knives in places they could knock off of the counter and get injured, or leave food out. It's like childproofing but higher up.

Again, this one has been trained not to counter surf and so far he hasn't tried to steal any food. He'll watch you prepare a meal, and wait patiently for you to remember that he's always hungry, and ready for a nibble, and he takes it so gently too.

I am pleased that the rescue calls and allows a person to "back out" gracefully if they find they've gotten into more than they can handle, or the dog is having issues.

This is the way it should be done, which is why I am taking time to write about it here. It's a good comparison for places that just treat animals like dollar signs.

I see it all over. People are breeding more and more dogs and selling, or trying to sell. I saw ads "only 6 puppies left"... finding 6 good homes for any kind puppy is difficult enough, but what about the 60 that died in the local shelter that day?

I stopped into the court house this afternoon and got the Dane licensed too. He's all legal now. :)

With warmer sunny days, Scooter should be out at large and should make for easy spotting. :)

I was out at the Palms on Saturday and looked for him, but no luck. If we had an idea which direction he had gone it would be easier. I am not convinced that the last sighting was really Scooter, as I had gone out there and saw an unchained neighborhood dog in the same vicinity as the deer carcas, but it could have been Scooter.

Someone told me on Saturday night that there's a golden retriever in the same neighborhood that got loose occasionally, and last time got away and didn't come back, and that the owners were still looking for him too. Maybe that will help locate Scooter if the goldie's parents are actively looking.

Has anyone checked Shiny's place lately? If he tried to call Pest and the number is disconnected.... no telling what could happen, but they only hold strays for a little while, and Scooter has seizures. If Shiny wouldn't help nurse a starving dog back to health .... (a little food, a little love, and some vitamins) http://www.spottydawg.com/mystory.html  then it's not likely he would help one that has seizures, in my opinion.

The ad for Scooter under the "lost pets pictured" is gone.

http://www.cchspets.org

Gee, it's not like they didn't have room on the website to keep it up. Do you suppose they found him?
