Well, our elderly dog just got a clean bill of health from the vet and she is 60lbs.  ARthritis is her big problem at 13+. The lab pup goes in 2 weeks. Not sure of her weight. Love them both. Labs and Goldens are the most popular family dogs and I can see why - very trainable and very lovable. The hair is work yes, but worth it for the joy the dogs bring. Bring the pooch with you. Just be sure to park in the shade if you have to leave him or her in the car for a bit. We went out to Montana a few years ago, the A/C broke but because the van had a moonroof, we could open the roof and windows and park in the shade and she was fine.

Now he likes Golden Retrievers. I'm cool with that.

Warning:  golden retrievers SHED like CRAZY.  Keeping up with the hair is a chore in itself.

They do shed, but all that LOVE is Soooooooooo worth it!!

She is six weeks old and from a rescue. I'll get some pictures up when I can.

"I can't get mama or the kids to agree, so I am stalling. We have the yard, the fence, big porch and a awesome raised and covered garden shed that would be perfect for them. "

Tife:
I don't know where you are, but a shed would not allow warmth in a winter condition. Nice and cool for the summer, but in the winter, a smaller space helps keep the dog warm, and lots and lots of straw, not a blanket.

The big thing is keeping them cool, the 'shed' is actually a workshop with electricity and lights, real doors and windows. Attached is a gardeners shed with a roof and walls, and windows that close up for the winter. The previous owners used light bulbs to heat the area up (they covered the inside with plastic) so they could keep their tropicals alive in the winter. My plan was to build a structure INSIDE of that structure, and like you said, use straw.

Chances are though, the dogs will be inside.  ;D

The porch is probably another good bet, its very large (36' x 12') with access to the fenced back yard. I could install the doggie door in a few minutes.

I JUST got a job back in the city where my house is (after 18mo of sleeping on the floor and in my car), and I just want some peace and quiet and the chance to relax before adding another family member (or 2). I have like 2 months of honey-do's to catch up on and I don't want to add doggy doos to the list just yet!

Congratulations NP! What's a 'CHUG'?

It's a Chiuaua/Pug mix. I was hoping for a larger dog, but knew that I Robyn was going get suckered by puppy eyes. Not being a dog person I think she didn't know that she would get suckered by a puppy face. Now she does. So far so good though, she's 6 weeks old, crate and paper trained. We can't take her outside until she gets her next two rounds of shots. Florida has way too many thing living on the ground to be worried about for young animals.

So I get to stop and get all the necessary puppy stuff on my way home from work tonight.

Chiuaua/pug mix.  So it's not a very handsome dog then, lol.  Darned cute in that bugged eyed-smooshed face dog way though.  It's not a shedder!  Big plus.  Pics expected.

They are also know as Pugwawa's, go figure. Actually this one looks more like a Chihuahua than a pug. It looks like a stock Chihuahua with a broader muzzle. She does have the pug coloration and the large (but not buggy) eyes. Like I said, I was hoping for a larger dog, but my wife saw puppy face and that was enough.

Little dogs tend to be barkers....yap yap yap yap yap yap yap......makes me crazy.  My parents have FOUR jack russels....yap yap yap yap.....I have two good size dogs....we have the occasional woof and the occasional bark bark bark - but only if you are a stanger coming up the drive....but they stop quickly.  Oh NP, what have you gotten into.

There's a Jack Russell down the street that backs and is just plain nasty. If the pug shows through in the personality we should not hear too much barking, but it certainly won't be quiet.  We'll know which way it's going to go in a couple of months. Right now my wife is kid of reeling as I don't think she knew how much different this was going to be than a kitten. She asked, she received. We now have a new family member.

We already have 3 cats, none of which seem to be thrilled by the puppy idea. She's 6 weeks old and doesn't do much more the eat, poop and sleep. But the active times, they are a coming.
