The puppy has stopped eating and won't eat wet food or kibble in any combination. She will drink water but the wife is also reporting that she is wimpering a lot and appears lethargic. I told her to call the woman we got her from. We need answers quickly on what's going on

Well she has had soft stools since we got her, but it was dismissed on the first day because of the stress of a new house, new people, etc. However because of the symptoms we took her to the vet and she has parvo. The vet estimates the exposure to have been 7-10 days ago. Needless to say I am emotionally all over the map. We have decided to go for the inpatient treatment and in about 48 hours we should have a really good idea of which direction things are going to go. She only ways 1.5 pounds but she is a puppy and has lots of fight in her. Either way the woman we got her from is going to get a phone call after I settle down and can speak to her without blowing up.

Okay, time to get myself back into a work frame of mind.

The closest human condition I can relate it to is rotavirus, but with a much higher mortality rate if untreated. I called the rescue and told them what we heard from the vet. They of course said it was impossible. I talked to her husband who said if we had the puppy euthanized and provided him with paperwork from the vet we would get a full refund. I just said "okay" and hung up the phone before I said something really caustic and full of colorful phraseology. So Izzy is in the quarantine unit at the vets with IV's, antibiotics,

Okay, in the middle of the post we got a call from the vet. She is doing well and has not vomited since they put and IV with glucose in her. She will not need a blood transfusion either. So for now things are looking pretty good. The real test will be tomorrow morning. If she does not get sick over night she will get some food. If that stays down things will definitely be looking up.

They should give you a refund period due to the outrageous vet bill you will be handed.

With a name like Izzy - she should be OK.

Hope so!

Prayers out to you and the whole NP family...that just sucks emotionally.

Side not: Is Parvo contagious (to dogs or humans), or does it affect humans?  Man, I feel for you. What an emotional roller coaster. Call if you just need to vent.

The canine parvovirus only affect dogs. It's a nasty nasty virus.

Morning update:

I called the vets and they said she looked really "bright" this morning. When the tech walked to the room her tail was wagging and she ran right across the cage to see her.  She did not vomit last night at all. They have not fed her yet either. Anyhow they are going to check with the vet to see if she can start feeding her. If they can feed her and she does not get sick there may be a very good chance we can get her back tomorrow.

The good news is that parvo is like the measles. Once a dog gets it it is immune to it (assuming it survives)  The bad news is that the only thing that has been proven to kill parvo is straight bleach. The virus can live up to seven years without a host. Damn! So we cannot have any unvaccinated dogs in the house without risk of exposure.

All in all we got great news.

Wow NP. I've been so busy I haven't had time to read much. I'm glad the vets took care of the puppy and you didn't need to euthanize him. Poor little thing.

Afternoon update: Little Izzy is eating ravenously and has turned back into a puppy. At the moment if she keeps this trend up we will get her back tomorrow morning!  :cross:
