The more research I'm doing here, the more he looks like all Border Collie, just that he's basically black instead of black and white. Lots of photos on Google. Border Collies are excellent pets, smart dogs, and great farm dogs for their herding instincts.

By the way CLW... the photos are GREAT!!! Love the goats, and the horses too!
And I am also a kitty person, we just don't have any for a couple of reasons. #1 my Dalmatian (when he was alive) didn't like them, and #2 my sister is deathly allergic.

NP - I am feeding Purina One Smart Bites to both dogs now as it is the only thing the old lady will eat and our pup has turned one. Both dogs seem to really like it and the pup is thriving on it.  Angel the old lady used to eat one of Dad's products but then turned her nose up at it a few months ago.

She is a great cat to Ko.  I swear she thinks she is one of us.  She is still quite a spunky thing too.  Since we brought Mike inside (he WAS a barn cat who had an accident causing him to lose his back foot) she has really come to life, lol.  He tags at her and makes her play - like it or not.  We also have five barn cats (Leona, Bruce, Phil, Ron and Gabby).  Having a lot of animals is an expensive upkeep/habit/hobby but we all really do enjoy them.  Even the dumb goats.  Susan is a HOOT!  She does the funniest things and makes the goofiest faces.

I know I have mentioned this a gazillion times, but we have Invisible Fence and if you have dogs, it is THE GREATEST invention ever.  My two come in and out as they please (pretty much - barring wet coats or mud!) and run free on about - oh - ten acres.  If we are not here they have their own special place in the barn to get out of the weather in with their blankets, etc.  I highly, highly, highly recommend this company.

Update on the rescued dog:

Well, most of my shelter contacts are full right now so it looks like I'll be fostering this guy until an opening comes up. That means he will need to be neutered, rabies and other vacination shots, and tested for heartworm, (plus meds if he needs them).

Cost is about $350 at our vet for the "works" including the heartworm preventative meds.

All donations will be graciously accepted towards his bills. You can donate by going to www.dirtydoglive.com and click on the "Donate" button on the calendar page. No amount is too small. Anything "extra" will go towards sponsoring another neutering or spaying for another animal.

Having him neutered will benefit him in so many ways, including helping him to find a good permenant home later... even if that means my house. I'd rather he stayed here than go to a questionable home or back to a life of chains. Right now he has the free run of our 50 foot fenced area, but eventually I will need to introduce him to the other two I have, and I wouldn't do that until he's been to the vet for a check-up.

Neutering will also stop the cycle of breeding, should he ever come in contact with an unspayed female. His shots are necessary as I doubt his previous owner ever did a thing for him beyond some food and water occasionally.

So, c'mon folks, get involved! Let's help this one out together! You'll get that great feeling from doing the right thing.

Hey! Got our first donation of $100 towards the dog. You know who you are... thank you very much! Definitely doing the right thing. Neutering him (and updating shots) will also make him more adoptable.

Things are looking up for him.
I brushed him out yesterday (took out about 1/2 of his fur) and have been giving him extra protein to help bring him back to good health. What a sweet dog! He's giving extra appreciative kisses, and puts his muzzle in my neck for "hugs".
Sad, but when I bring him his food he gets excited and still runs in circles from being on the chain his whole life.
I gave him a tennis ball and we played for a while. He was so happy.
He has only barked one instance since he's been here, and that was today when the mailman delivered a box to our door.
My other two have been able to sniff him through the screen and the fence, (no fighting or carrying on) but I still don't want to put them together until he's had his doc visit. I'm waiting to hear back from the vet now about an appointment.

Thank you to those who are donating! We just got another donation for $50. I am very appreciative, as I know things are tight for all of us, and while I love animals so, my personal resources are low (just like everyone else) and I am not a "rescue", just someone wanting to help when no one else will, even if that means one at a time.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

Hey, who are these guys?

Getting to know you....:)

Carrots are good for you!
He's not even had a bath yet. (Very stinky I might add...)
Just think how good he's going to look when he's healthy.

Ooooh am I exhausted. On top of everything else I did accomplish today... work, housework, laundry, dinner, dishes, and more... Mr. Zip and I gave all three dogs a bath.... and I'll tell ya, it doesn't matter how clean you get a dog, they still smell like a wet dog when you're done until they dry off. Peeee-uuuu. I have to admit it's not smelling too good in here right now.

Midnight, (the new guy) did great, but once we got the fur all wet you could see how skinny he really is. Poor thing. He's barely there, just a mass of fur.

I didn't take photos.... too much water for me to mess around with the cameras... but I'll take some tomorrow when he's dry. He's a nice dog. Happy. Loved the water, but was a bit nervous about it all.

Just finished mopping the floors and I'm hitting the sack.

I have to laugh when I look at the "Dirty Dog" all wet. He's definitely having a bad hair day. LOL!!

Excellent news this morning.
The ANNA Shelter has an opening for a low cost neutering, so the $150 (plus I'll add some more for a donation towards another spay/neuter) will cover his shots, neutering, heartworm check, deworming, and all of his meds. He has an appointment for July 30th. :) The neutering alone for a dog his size is around $85.00, but because he's been neglected, he'll need all his blood work-ups and shots, as though it's his first time. If you have a dog current on his shots, you'd only need to pay for neutering. It's less for smaller dogs. He'll come back home with me to recover.

We need a shelter like the ANNA Shelter in Crawford County. Hmmmm.....

Update...
I've brushed three dog's worth of fur and matts from him now, but he's a little skitterish still in some areas, so we're taking it slow and easy. Mainly around the underside of his neck and the back sides of his legs. His tail is so thick and bushy it's a job by itself. He had his bath yesterday, and is eating well. He actually left some food in the bowl last night, so that's a good sign. I've been giving him some extra protein, egg, chicken, beef, mixed in with some good dry food.
I'll be taking a trip to town to get him his license, which is real important to do, even if he's only here temporarily.
I think he's an English Shepherd. There's a similar look between the English Shepherd, the Australian Shepherd, and Border Collie. The Aussie has a docked tail, where this one has a full tail, but that's either bred in, or a choice, like cropping ears (which I am against, naturally) My Dane has his natural ears. I think the Border Collies are a bit smaller than this one.
The three breeds come in all colors, and this one is all black. The English Shepherd "black" dogs can have markings like a Rottweiler, or are usually mixed with white markings so all black would be rare. All three have the perky ears.
This one has got the fringing of fur on his front legs, and his back thighs has a thicker longer nap. His collar and chest area is longer too, but through the core is shorter hair.
I'm no vet, but I'd say that because of poor nutrition he's lost much of his coat, which contributed to the matting. It was just coming out in globs and chunks, but no bald patches.
I am sure the vet will know for sure when she sees him. He is really beautiful and his disposition is wonderful. In general he likes the grooming. He's let me take carrots out of his mouth and will "sit" to get it back, wants to play, no snapping or aggression at all. He'll fetch a ball and bring it back to you. Good boy. :)
So many good dogs need a home.
Ok.. lots to do today so I better get some work done.
