I'm sure the Redhead will appreciate it when she turns on the monitor today . . . (giggle)

The Crawford County Humane Society has both a whippet AND a black lab mix for adoption.

Thanks Zip, but unfortunately, I don't live in the county anymore.  ;)

One thing you may consider is a breed-specific rescue in your area.

Google the name of your city, + "Whippet Rescue" + "Lab Rescue".  I am sure you'll find lots of needy pets looking for a good home and love.

Rescues tend to want a lot of information about you before they let you adopt, but that's in the bestinterest of the pet. No system is foolproof, but they really try not to send a rescued animal back into a bad situation.

Once you're approved for adoption, then you'll know you did a good thing by providing a home for an otherwise unwanted but loveable animal.

:)

Isn't she lovely?
She, and others, are available for adoption at the ANNA Shelter in Erie.

A note from the ASPCA:

And this fall, New York State finally passed its Humane Euthanasia bill (A. 999B) for stray and shelter animals. Effective next October, the new law bans the euthanasia of these animals by gassing, requiring that they instead be humanely euthanized via lethal injection by a certified euthanasia technician, licensed veterinary technician, or licensed veterinarian. It also prohibits intracardiac euthanasia—a painful injection right into the heart—on unsedated shelter animals.

The ASPCA is fighting against inhumane gassing.... which SHINY still does at the Crawford County Humane Society.

Again:
....bans the euthanasia of these animals by gassing, requiring that they instead be humanely euthanized via lethal injection by a certified euthanasia technician....[/]

Looking to adopt a kitty this Christmas?
Cats are available for a $60 adoption fee and are already spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

Tiger Ranch Rescues in need of adoption!
It was just this past October that we anxiously awaited the sentencing of former Tiger Ranch Cat “Sanctuary” proprietor, Lin Marie, as well as sought to hold accountable local humane law officers responsible for the continual clearance of what was actually a slow kill death camp for cats. (Previous update and call to action can be read here. )

Due to Lin Marie's failure to complete a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation prior to trial last October, sentencing was pushed back yet again for the mental evaluation to take place. This was all a sideline to the fact that evidence of cats at several residences Lin Marie considered home, including Tiger Ranch, was brought to the judge's attention – Lin Marie was in continual direct violation of her bail and, as a result, spent a little over a month in prison, recently being released mid November of last month.

The sentencing was postponed, scheduled for December 4th.
Unfortunately, Lin Marie has yet again defied court order and failed to receive the required therapy to follow her psychiatric evaluation, and sentencing has been postponed indefinitely.   We are forced to merely report this update, as our concerns for the ultimate outcome of this trial have been put on hold - there remains important work to be done!

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has announced that, as of December 31, 2009, the Clarion SPCA will be shutting down for good, giving the brave feline survivors of Tiger Ranch less than a month to find loving homes for the holidays - before they are scattered to other branches of PSPCA shelters across Pennsylvania.

The survivors, however, do not deserve to be carted to yet another shelter – they are comfortable in Clarion, yet healthy and ready to be sprung to their forever homes! VFA as well as every individual who has a special place in their heart for these wonderfully resilient heroines and heroes want to see them adopted locally. A network of dedicated Tiger Ranch Rescue Support volunteers have called themselves into action to create a website, go door-to-door informing a radius of local businesses and individuals passing by, as well as schedule as many adoption events as possible to find every survivor a home for the holidays, new year, and many more years to come! (We would like to thank this individual in particular!)

The Clarion SPCA is located at 9562 Route 322, Shippenville PA. Regular Adoption hours are Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm, t
he shelter can be phoned at 814-226-9192.

Be sure to attend the shelter's first holiday adopt-a-thon event and celebration,
this Sunday 6th December, from 12pm-6pm!!

I always thought injection was a better option. I never thought a law would pass though.  Kudos to those who pushed to help get this passed.

Over the years I have had to opt for euthanasia for some of my pets, including cats, and just recently with my beloved Joey.

His experience was done in two parts, the first being a shot to allow him to fall asleep peacfully as we held him, and the second part to stop his heart once he was in a deep sleep. While it was so difficult for us to watch and be a part of, he died knowing we loved him.

Gassing should only be done when there is NO OTHER alternative, which IMO is very rare. Even a dangerous animal can be sedated with a dart gun from a safe distance before euthanizing. They sedate bears before tagging them in the wild. There is no excuse not to sedate an animal already in captivity.

I attended a workshop about a portable gas chamber unit for emergencies such as an overturned truckload of pigs, with several injuries, ect. The portable gas chamber was available to alleviate their suffering. I think if you can pick one up (causing it pain and suffering) and put it into a chamber, you could give them an injection.

It's people who are untrained and uncaring.... ahem.... who still opt for gas, knowing that it's inhumane to toss, shove, or lead a frightened pet into a box and gas them, rather than to allow the animal to simply fall asleep in peace, with a kind word and consideration.

I am very happy there are people fighting to get these laws changed. I hope it happens here in PA ...soon.

Now... to fight for the unchaining of dogs everywhere. That is a widespread and unnecessary cruelty.
