my daughter had knee surgery yesterday - I now have a daughter on my sofa with a full leg cast, but also have her two dogs joining my dog.  I am learning a whole new world, you can't give one attention without it bothering the other, you have to feed and let them out in stages or it is overwhelming. We only had one major meltdown when my daughter gave her small dog a special treat and my dog reacted very negatively.  We are adjusting.  She will go back to work in about a week - but her dogs will stay for at least three more weeks (she can't handle them on crutches).  I could use some volunteers for walking them.  Can't walk all three atthe same time.  Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,
Janet

When Stevie first came to live here we had some tense moments with my other two dogs. Socializing them is very tricky and has to be done carefully. It takes time.

I had to keep mine separated from him and play the "shuffle" until one day about 3 weeks later, they all went outside together, and acted like the best of friends. They had finally got used to seeing each other, the "old dogs" got used to the idea of a new kid in town....

And yes... what a royal pain it was until that happened. Every day was a new challenge.

Every now and then Stevie and Reilly still have "words" which makes my hair stand on end... but they have never injured each other. Reilly is too old (in Great Dane Years) so I worry about him. Yesterday he and Stevie had a misunderstanding over a carrot, and Reilly slipped and fell on the kitchen floor. He has a difficult time getting up now because of his age and hips, and I have to get carpeting underneath him and his back feet so he can get his footing without slipping, and then help him back up... all 160 pounds of him.... Whew.

Mr. Zip just built him a covered "wheelchair" ramp up the steps so he can get up and down more easily now.

But as far as the fighting... they are establishing their dominance, their social order. You have to let them know that YOU are the alpha and will not tolerate any dissention among the ranks. When a fight breaks out, everyone gets scolded and a time out.... in another room away from each other.

Walking... use both your front door and your back door and long leads attached to something so they won't get away. Put one out front, the other out back and then switch the next time so they can sniff the other when it's their turn. They get sort of used to each other that way.

Hope it helps. Most dogs learn to get along eventually.

Just wanted to add that if you can keep yours in the kitchen, (or whomever is being aggressive) and the others in another room for a few days he will also get used to the idea of new dogs in the house.

Thanks Zip for the words of wisdom.  It is tense while watching, but my husband says as long as we don't favor one over the other they will work it out - but it is hard to watch as they dominate or stress each other.  Got all of them out together tonight - but when they were on their leads (except for the small one) they jumped on the small one without reason.  I am on my toes.  I do know that I can do this - and I am not scared.  Dogs wrestlling are just wresting - but when they show their teeth I get worries. Thanks for the reply.

Use a water bottle or a (glass of water) too and douse them when they are in the act... but be careful not to get in the middle of a fight as they will bite you too.. unintentionally of course. The water will distract them, and again, it will show them that you are the boss. Squirt them right in the face if they are fighting. The water won't hurt them a bit, and you can do it from a safe distance.

Ya know.....if I could, I'd get a new one every week.  Ugh.  Every time I see/know of someone paying hundreds of dollars for a dog from a breeder, it makes me sad.

What makes me sadder.... with all the Pit Bulls dragging their "Owner" around our neighborhood...I see AHOLES breeding AHOLES and they end up with "short bus" dogs and they think it is "neat". We have guys trying to compensate for "phallus minimus" by having them in the first place. They usually tend to get loose and terrorize a neighborhood or they end up in the pound being fitted for a halo because their owner either abandoned it or went to jail. Maybe private owners should have all their animals sterilized as part of licensing and ownership?

Don't get me wrong, I have had dogs and yuck...even a cat or two. My pets either died of old age or in the case of one... poisoned by a neighbor, hence us having no more pets shy of goldfish or spider. All of my animals.... short of goldfish and 3 of my Ferrets were given to me or were abandoned. I chuckle when I think someone in the future will dig up my property.  ;)

My point is...if you can't afford kids, you can't afford a dog or cat. They are about the same in responsibility... Doctors(Vets), Training and cleaning up after and... "boarding" when you want to go away or you plan your vacation WITH them. Babies grow out of diapers but who said a dog is "dumb". Do they clean up YOUR poop with their paws? ;D

I looked thru all the photos last night. Wish we had more land. We've rescued two and will probably get a new one when the 14 years crosses the bridge. She is doing pretty well so far this winter.

NP... so true. There should be mandatory spay/neuter laws for any pet owner, along with a ban on breeding in the USA, across the board. Enough of the back-yard breeders looking to make a buck. And those breeding for "show"... get over it already. You do such a disservice to all of the others that your little trophies just aren't worth it.

I can't tell you how many times people get a dog, then want to have a litter to "get another one just like him". What about the other 7 pups? They can end up in shelters, or worse... occasionally good homes can be found, but the breeding is much faster than rescues can rescue the unlucky ones who end up on a chain, or abused, or facing a gas chamber.

The looks on the dogs faces (above) at the CCHS is heartbreaking. The eyes say it all.

We have 3 ft of snow out there. Now think about the chained dog living in that..... and the owners who won't even get them a heated water bowl so they can drink to quench their thirst while they sit in isolation on a chain, in the snow... in the back yard....year after year.

These irresponsible owners won't even bring them into their garage because they are afraid Fido may relieve himself on their cement floor, because they have never house-trained them. So instead of taking less than a few minutes to clean up after them, they ban them to the snow, and 6 ft of chain.

All you have to do is call your legislators. http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org

The Dogs Deserve Better founder, Tamira, spent 52 days chained to a dog house on the steps of the capital building in Harrisburg hoping to get a law passed against chaining 24-7.

The bill never even got addressed because those in power didn't give a dang.

PLEASE join Dogs Deserve Better in the fight to help change the living conditions of these forgotten, precious friends. You really aren't "joining" because it's free to check out their website... of course they need donations, but you can get active in many ways by simply writing a letter to those in Harrisburg, or asking for DDB to send literature to an address of a person with a chained dog.

Do it because today is my birthday... it can be my present. :)
