Thank you. Animals are so important to our lives, and treating them kindly and with respect only improves us as human beings, regardless if you are a vegetarian or not. There is absolutely no excuse for causing an animal needless suffering or abuse, or standing by silently while someone else is abusing an animal.

My pets are like my children, a valued and precious part of my family. I have enjoyed listening to the stories from others, regarding their pets also.

Pet Issues was a good topic on Hey Martha Forums, and I hope it continues to be a heavily visited topic here on EE Ticket.

Speaking of pets.........

I have a homeless young cat (male) I'm trying to find a home for. He showed up here August 28th. I would guess hes not even close to a year old.

I have used Fronline flea and tick on him, so hes clean of those critters.

I did bring him in last night, he uses the litter box just fine. My wife and I have five cats and after a short time they all got along.

I'm really trying to avoid the likes of Stray Haven in Greenville here. Being we already have five cats, I really do not want a sixth.

Are birds counted as part of this pet talk? I might be getting some finches. I know they aren't like a dog or a cat but they are pets I guess in some folks eyes.     :P

As far as I'm concerned they are. Excluding livestock, if it's anything that you as a person are responsible for the care, feeding and cleaning of... it's a pet.

Good. Maybe I'll start talking about them birds when I get them. My neighbors got about 6 in a large cage and their pretty interesting to look at. Don't make much noise either.

we had two cats for 20 years, a stray dog for two years, we are "empty nesters"

now it seems there are chipmunks trying to invade the soffit and fascia  on the house.. i wonder if that is a sign of a cold winter coming... the dang little buggers are hauling walnuts in by the bucketloads...going to have to put a stop to that this weekend.

As far as I'm concerned they are. Excluding livestock, if it's anything that you as a person are responsible for the care, feeding and cleaning of... it's a pet.

Including livestock, Nightmare.

If you put an animal in a fenced area, prohibit it in any way from caring for itself freely, like in a cage, or an aquarium, or any living thing that otherwise would be free, then you are responsible for it. It doesn't matter if it's a buffalo, a cow, goat, hamster, a frog you caught in the back yard, a snake, or the crickets you plan to feed to your iguana.

Even though we are at the "top of the food chain" it does not mean we should be inhumane to the "food". I saw a video of a backwoods woman who skinned a rabbit before it was dead. It's absolutely wrong.

You all know I advocate for chained dogs, which I think is horrible.

Just because something is legal, doesn't make it right. There's no "law" against many of the things we do, but there are social rejections.

Until the laws are changed to protect the dogs, I suggest we use social pressure and education to "wake up" the neighbors.

Please think about humane traps before you do anything to harm the chipmonks.  While I certainly would not want to share my home with them either, they are just planning on staying warm and well fed this winter. You can trap and relocate them to the woods if you do it soon, so they can find a natural home and have time to stock up.

Yes, it takes more time and commitment than setting out some poison for them, but it's the right thing to do.

no zip, i wasnt setting traps, just opening up the eaves of the house and removing the walnuts and sealing the house. one year they got in and we heard them crunching on walnuts all winter long.. lol

i grew up on a farm. my dad was the kindest man to animals there was that ever lived.  now mind, we lived on a farm so there were animals we had to eventually eat but my dad taught us that how we treated animals revealed much of what we are made of inside.  i would add that our relationships with other human beings can do that as well.

I kind of delineate between pets, livestock and wild animals. They all get the same amount of respect from me. They're entitled.  Anything with an exoskeleton however gets less, especially if it's in the house. That's in the marriage contract!

speaking of which, the kids and i found a locust shell yesterday on a tree trunk we specifically looked for one for about a week or so since we heard the locusts "singing". my little niece starts kindergarten tomorrow and when i told her about when i was a kid we found them and took them for "show and tell" she was excited to find one...   brought back memories for me....  any of you ever found a locust shell...

it just occurred to me , i hijacked this thread , sorry, wont do it again...
