Am reading a book titled "Rescue Ink" which is very good and I am thinking of you Zipper.  It is a group of biker type guys who rescue any kind and all kinds of animals in the Long Island area.
Hoping that someone finds Scooter.

Hey Janet, that's pretty cool. I'm assuming it's a nonfiction?

I'm looking into adopting a Great Dane from a rescue in the Pittsburgh area. Our Dane, Jake, passed in 2007, and we lost Joey last October. We still have the Dirty Dog, but it's time for him to have a brother or sister.

The rescues in the Pittsburgh area have several available. One was tied to a tree and abandoned, and was skin and bones. He has scars in his neck from his collar. Poor guy. They say he's doing much better, gaining weight and getting big. He's not quite housebroken yet though. He was used to going when he needed to because he was outdoors. That's a tough issue because Great Danes pee about as much as horses do... and when you have carpets... not good at all.

Great Danes have short fine hair with very little fur on their bellies and underneath. They should not be left outside in the cold weather, as there is no protection for them. I remember talking to a man who left his Pitt Bull outside every winter. He said she lost a lot of weight during the winter, but he never understood why because he fed her just as much. When summer came back around she would regain her weight.

It's from shivering. Shivering uses up calories, and the poor dog was shivering all winter long. She was a short hair dog left chained to a house with no straw, just some old blankets that would get wet with the snow and rain, and then freeze, and she would have to lay on them.

He didn't think he was doing anything wrong.

....

I housebroke all of my kids by taking them outside every hour during the day ~whether they had to go or not. When they went, they got tremendous praise and treats. They figured it out soon enough, but you have to be consistent with them and you have to be home to do it. Otherwise crate training works, but that's tough. I don't like to leave them in a cage.

Anyway, I am beginning the adoption process. They want references... anyone want to be a reference for me? Just PM your contact info.

At this time I am not too particular which Dane we get as long as it's a good fit for our family, will get along with my other dog and he/she likes us too. The adoption process is usually pretty thorough, and will require a home inspection to be sure we are who we claim to be, and that we're not hoarding or obviously abusive to our pets. They also want to see a fenced yard. They will check with our veterinarians, check our references, and also come back at another point in time after the adoption to be sure we are caring for the new kid properly. All well and good by me.

Great Danes have a short life expectancy. The average age is 7 years, though they can live to 10 or 12. But those years are good ones. They're fun, goofy, but also protective and regal all at the same time.

We could adopt any kind of dog, it really wouldn't matter to me if he was a mixed breed or a small dog, but because we have experience with the giant breed and their special requirements, we can offer a home to one that's needy and the least adopted. In fact, I'm told that large black dogs are usually the last to be adopted in any shelter. People are more afraid of them.

So, it begins.

The observations below apply to owner-responsible cats, not strays or dropped off abandoned cats, which is a whole other matter.

Outdoor cats live outside all year. They normally aren't litter trained ~unless they are also indoor cats.
Outside cats usually hunt more than an indoor cat will, though one of my females was a hunter.
The outdoor cats live in barns or wherever they can find shelter, and sometimes will disappear for days on an adventure, even if you have had them spayed or neutered.
Indoor cats spend most of their time indoors, and some will not even go out if you open the door and leave it open for them.
Indoor cats are litter trained, and will even come back inside to use the litter box.
Outdoor cats are extremely independent while the indoor cat is more content to lay at your feet.

We were adopted by an outdoor cat. She came to our house daily, played with Joey when he was outside, and would not come in the house at all. I physically brought her in but she didn't like it.

Eventually we built her a really well insulated A-Frame 2 compartment cat house and she moved with us when we moved from the old house here. She always had breathing issues, but got pneumonia one year and had to be put down. She and Joey were buddies, but he did not like any other stray cats at all. For some reason they were good together. I think it's because she didn't run from him like the others did. Her name was "Little Black Kitty".

Cats are cool. I really like them too, though I write more about my dogs then the cats, mainly because I haven't had a cat now for several years.

Here's a link to cat houses and how to build a heated cat house.

"So is there No Leash Laws for Cats but there are Leash Laws for Dogs... ??? ...if Not...Why is that... ??? ...Just Curious... ;) ...and Wonder what others think... ??? "

Well.... I suppose some man came up with that one. Maybe because you don't have to take the cat out for a walk?

I can't for the life of me figure out how chaining a dog to a house in the yard for it's entire life is still legal, but it is. Blatant cruelty, ....completely and unnecessarily cruel.... and yet you see it all the time.

If I understand the law, it is not legal to have a dog tethered to a doghouse. Must be in a house (house dog) or an enclosure like a kennel. My personal feeling on cats is; I don't care for house cats.  I do however value a barn cat for keeping the rodent population down. Not happy about them killing birds and rabbits. They are a more natural killer than a dog I think.  ::)

State law reference—Dangerous Dog Control Law,
Sec. 10-11. - Control of animal.  (a) General control.  (1) It shall be unlawful for the owner of any animal to permit such animal to be out of his immediate control and restraint, or to be left unattended off the premises of the owner, or to be upon the property of another person without the permission of the owner or person in possession of such other property. For the purposes of this chapter, condominium and apartment common property shall not be considered to be the premises of the animal owner. Voice control does not constitute control of an animal. (2) Restraint of dogs and/or animals shall be maintained as follows:  a. When upon the premises of the owner, all animals shall be kept indoors or in a primary enclosure as defined by this chapter in such a manner as to contain the animal within the bounds of the owner's premises, or on a leash in the hands of a person that possesses the ability to restrain the animal. Tethering as a means of primary enclosure is not permitted. b. When off the premises of the owner, all animals shall at a minimum be maintained on an appropriate chain, leash or tie not exceeding 6 feet in length, and in the hands of a person who possesses the ability to restrain the animal.

Here is a section of our state Law...if you call the animal control they will come out to check on a chained animal (sometimes they are slow to do this)  we have called on chained Dogs and they have taken care of the Problem...(sometimes you have to push them to enforce the no Tethering law ) ...(not sure Why)...also they will tell you that all Leash Laws pertain to all animals...we have two neighbors that walk their cats...either on a Leash or in a Stroller... ;) ...and yes when people that do not know them see this...they do a second take (look)... :) ...

Which state? Sorry, I don't know where you live.
I know California passed anti-tethering laws recently.
