Ko-Shin..... I feel for your loss..... I think this is the reason we don't have anymore warm blooded pets. They become part of the family and we get tired of going through the heartache. Our last furry critters were 5 ferretts. We had them all well past their supposed live span but in the end...an empty house. I have been talking to my wife about getting a dog in a few years.... maybe time it to expire after we do  :o   I have seen many older people who are alone with an aging animal.... actually follow their pet after it's demise.

My Grand Daughter wants a horse but she won't feed or clean up after the dog or the cats. My son may become an Ahole and end up buying one and I laughed at him as he has NO CLUE as to upkeep of an equine other than the short time he had training with horses in the PSP academy. He hated it then and that was temporary. The cost alone had better be worth it, let alone feed, vets etc. It takes a special person to own a horse and I don't think he am one... ::)

I live in the city but God forbid anyone digging up my property in the future. It is a pet graveyard... from Gerbils to Ferrets to the usual dogs and cats over the years... Throw in a few iguanas and a Tokay Gecko to boot. I have shed enough tears on pets for a while. Maybe I should get a tortoise or Parrot to live 100 years... problem solved  ;D . Yeah right LOL.

The vet bills alone for any pet can make ya go broke, lol.  We have three horses and all had to have shots for th upcoming show season.  You can't take them anywhere without proof of all sorts.  I have to have a signed "veterinary inspection" form and all kinds of shot records.  Shots last week for the three were a little over $400.  Shoeing?  Every 8 weeks mind you is sickening.  I have taken to using an amish ferrier and he is $100 a pop.  The non-amish ferriers are $130 per set of shoes for the type I get.  I got a full set and a half set and one full trim for $95 last week.  He is awesome.  Hay, feed, OH!  And poop!!!!  You have to be able to manage poop.  So you need a big tractor and a manure spreader.  Or a very big 4-wheeler/gator maybe with the smaller spreaders.  Thousands right there.  You have to have a safe place to house and lots of room for grazing....a.k.a. a barn and fencing.  They get sick and they tend to have joint issues at some point.  And if you want to ride and/or show them?  Truck and trailer for transport and don't get me started on the cost of saddles and other gear.  The last show saddle I bought my daughter was $700 bucks.  And it was second-hand from some other kid who had outgrown the thing.  We go to tack swap meets in spring and fall and pick up a lot of stuff that way.  I'm babbling.  But if someone isn't truly into them, don't go there.  We were lucky that my daughter really, really loves them and enjoys and participates in their care.  Otherwise, we would not have them.  When she is grown and out on her own, I highly doubt we will have them anymore.

Hi everyone. I've been MIA for a few days, nose to the grindstone working on a website. I wish I was just a little bit smarter..... it would make things so much easier. But then I guess I would just try to stretch that little bit of extra to it's limits too.

KoShin:
I know we have PMed each other, but I am so sorry for your loss. Take comfort in knowing you, all of you who love your pets, were able to provide a loving home. I know they give us so much love in return, which can never be replaced. It's just all a gift from God. † I feel Heaven must be full of all the beautiful creatures that He's created, so I am sure we'll see our friends again.

CLW... I had to laugh when reading about the upkeep of a horse. So true. We had horses for many years with my stepdaughter. She eventually moved away and took them with her to New Mexico. I love them... they frighten me a bit because of their size and power, but I never felt I could comfortably handle a horse. She would lay on the ground and just let hers walk all around her.... nerves of steel.... and trust.

Shoeing... tack.... vet bills! The morning of my wedding day, our Appy "escaped" his fenced area and got into the grain barrel. He got bloat, and we had to call the vet... (Brian Nogay)... to come and help. Mr. Zip had to stay back and help the vet while I had to go to town to meet my bridesmaids to get ready for the afternoon ceremony. My poor stepdaughter was bawling the whole time, worried sick, I wasn't sure if Mr. Zip would make it to the church in one piece because they had to twitch the horse and give him mineral oil and the horse wasn't having any part of that. I guess they had to tranquilize the Appy...which again, he hated needles from his previous coggins testing and really would get apprehensive just seeing the vet. What a day. Dr. Nogay saved him... and the day.... and the wedding went on.

She has a small ranch now with her b-friend, who is studying veterinary medicine and ....breeding.... which I am conflicted with. Same reasons as I disapprove of breeding dogs right now... to many unwanted ones, so why breed more? There's already bazillions of breeders out there... and not nearly enough homes. Horses and Chihuahuas... that's her "thing".

(BTW, your photos made me smile this morning!)

Lifetime: I had to laugh about the pet graveyard on your property.
In years to come... when archaeologists are digging up all of our pasts... just imagine what they're going to think of all of the breast augmentations they find from our era.

Can anyone sponsor a billboard for our area? We REALLY NEED one here... so many dogs still chained and unloved.

I'm just a "poor" girl, but someone here may be able to help.
You can also have your business advertised with the billboard!

Ahhh.  Twas not really bitching Puff.  (maybe a little, lol) Just trying to deter some poor schmuck from getting in deep without knowing if it is something they can handle.  You have to have the kids cooperation and have them understand its work!  We tried it out for a while with riding lessons on someone elses horse which involved pre-grooming, post grooming and cleaning the stall and feeding each time.   The interest held so we bought a fairly inexpensive "experienced" horse and boarded him making a deal with the girl who owned the place that she would take him at a discount if things didn't work out for us.  Well, 18 months later we are buying a place in the country.....the rest is history.  Now I didn't klnow if I would like it out here.  One thing I can say is that I may not always have horses, but I think I will always remain in the sticks.....or at least outside town where houses are spaced waaaaay apart.
