Hey MrR.  You've been rather quiet lately.  Been busy canning and freezing all those garden goodies?

ya know....i didn't grow up with air conditioning and i've never really gotten used to it .... when i lived in Savannah we had central air and i hated it ... i like the old window fans ... on one side pulling the air in and the other side pushing the air out .... and the sound of the fan is very soothing and helps me fall asleep ... i will run it all year round.

Just got super fresh corn on the cob.  Kid went ot into the field and picked it right there.  On the way back home stopped by a stand where alady sells homemade pies every Friday.  I tried to keepgoing....honest.  Got a red raspberry.  Got to love my amish neighbors I tell ya!

A funny thing I noticed was a big man mowing his lawn on a Cub Cadet.  Riding around la-dee-da.....and right next door an amish neighbor kid was pushing a Reel mower around.  Considering our world sometimes, it was weird as hell.

We have a reel mower. My kid hates it. I like it cuz it's fun to watch him mow with it.

I've yet to see a reeled yard that doesn't look just as darned nice as a mowed one.

Hi CLW!

Yeah, between that and a major league bout of sinus/ear infection I have read much more than posted. Thought I had it beaten but had to go back to the doc yesterday for another round of antibiotics. It has been hampering me for a few weeks... :(

As for the veggies, we have canned beets and hot pepper rings. We have a freezer full of brussell sprouts, green and wax beans and shredded zucchini to use in bread once it cools down. Also have kraut curing and garlic and onions stored away. My father in law put in a row of sweet corn and we cut and froze about 12 doz. Even with the loss of the tomato crop I am very pleased with the harvest this year. I still have to dig my potato crop once I lick this illness for good.

Speaking of reel mowers, I watched an Amish man cutting a hay field with two horses and a contraption that reminded me very much of and old school reel mower. Amazing to watch those folks operate, we sure have it good...or do they??? ;)

After grabbing my very fresh corn and pie this afternoon, I saw a line of about eight amish kids walking down the road coming home from school with their little blue dresses and pants and hats on all laughing and waving.....they seemed so carefree....so "Little House".......so much less stressed than my kids after a day at school.  Why is that?

Because they aren't worried that their new school clothes came from store A instead of the mall.  They aren't worried that they don't have the latest gadget.  They aren't worried that the other little Amish girl isn't trying to sleep with their boyfriend.  They aren't bulimic or anorexic.  They don't have ADHD and even if they did, it does not hinder their behavior.  They like themselves.  They like their family.

Sad for us really.

They also don't have high expectations. Are there any Amish engineers, doctors, physicists, musicians, artists? Although I yearn for that lifestyle, it has severe limitations.
Unless we go to a completely agrarian society, I can't see myself 'turning amish'

They do have their own unique set of problems (genetic, alcohohol abuse)
And I like indoor plumbing. :shakeass:

Amish engineers - don't need them unless you are designing the new and improved horse plow.

doctors - You can be a midwife!

physicists - don't need them either

musicians &  artists - are for the devil!
