It's their belief system though. Their "way" has worked for them for centuries despite the ever changing outside world. I would never want to live that way but I respect it on many levels.

When it comes to art,  they make beautiful furniture, clocks, baskets, belts, hats, boots, quilts, and a million other things.  There is an amish man - works for PennDot - who has a small shop out back and he fixes small engines.  If you have a weedwhacker, chainsaw, snowblower, lawn mower, etc that needs fixed he can do it CHEAP.  I had a chain saw that was giving me fits.  Husband took it some guy in Erie? Cost just about $100 bucks.  Lasted about a day and a half.  Took it to the amish gentleman who fixed it for $12 and showed me what was wrong so if it slipped up agan this is all you do.  And it did slip again and I fixed it in less than a minute.  Haven't had trouble since.  We use an amish ferrier to shoe the horses.  He lets me ask him dumb questions.  Like when his wife was pregnant for the first time I asked a thousand questions about amish giving birth.  The midwife is expensive and he's on a payment plan lol.  They have their own school in "downtown" Atlantic and they learn just about everything we did- then some.  Amish buggy's and what the different colors mean.  Everything they wear can indicate something to each other but we would never pick it out.  Interesting stuff.  Rambling..............

You're right Kimmi!   Right from the teachers mouth right there!

Just got super fresh corn on the cob.  Kid went ot into the field and picked it right there.  On the way back home stopped by a stand where alady sells homemade pies every Friday.  I tried to keepgoing....honest.  Got a red raspberry.  Got to love my amish neighbors I tell ya!

A funny thing I noticed was a big man mowing his lawn on a Cub Cadet.  Riding around la-dee-da.....and right next door an amish neighbor kid was pushing a Reel mower around.  Considering our world sometimes, it was weird as hell.

How much did the pie cost, Cindy? Maybe I'll go into the pie-baking business?

After grabbing my very fresh corn and pie this afternoon, I saw a line of about eight amish kids walking down the road coming home from school with their little blue dresses and pants and hats on all laughing and waving.....they seemed so carefree....so "Little House".......so much less stressed than my kids after a day at school.  Why is that?
Because they aren't worried that their new school clothes came from store A instead of the mall.  They aren't worried that they don't have the latest gadget.  They aren't worried that the other little Amish girl isn't trying to sleep with their boyfriend.  They aren't bulimic or anorexic.  They don't have ADHD and even if they did, it does not hinder their behavior.  They like themselves.  They like their family.

Sad for us really.

Plus the exercise is really good for everyone.

Accomplishment is satisfying to the soul through challenges and attaining goals, even if that's a laborsome chore that gets done, a delicious pie baked, a dress that is hand-made, or a floor that's been scrubbed clean.

I always feel much better if I have accomplished something with my day rather than been lazy.

$5.00 - $5.50 - $6.00....depends on what kind.I have yet to decipher what makesonecostmore than the other.  I always get red raspberry or blackberry.  If Mr Who stops first he gets peach or elderberry.  We re-named Friday "PieDay" at our house.  She is out every Friday.  :)

I haven't had a decent Shoofly pie in ages. The ones in the douth aren't quite the same. Much like a key lime in Florida is akin to ambrosia whilst in the rest of the world they're some mediocre tart desert.

Take 285 towards Cochranton.  Almost 3 miles exactly turn right onto Lake Road.  She is the third place on the right.....right next to the railroad tracks.  Never know what kind of pies she will have but she will take orders!   We always stop and order a few around the holidays.   If she has sweet rolls out GET THEM!  They are to DIE for.  Best ever.

I was thinking about elderberry pie today.  I remember picking them for my grandmother and her sending us out two or three more times to get more because we never picked enough.  I haven't had elderberry pie in so long!

There is just nothing like a fresh home made pie. (Hence, PieDay at the Who house!)

We get so freakin' excited when we see her stand out for the first time in the spring.  We are so pathetic.  And last year she was out until nearly December.  This past PieDay her husband was manning the table and I tried like hell to drive by and about squealed to a harsh stop.  He laughed at me as I approached the table......"Well, you tried to keep going.  Didn't work I see."
