I saw that a couple of days ago. She's funny. Check her out on YouTube.
Hey, she's right about not wanting to bring up a kid in LA. That's a lot of traveling for her but it's better for the kid to have a childhood, a place to play, and real friends and family.

Thanks for posting that Kimmie - would not have seen it otherwise.  It was great - very funny.  Gun raffle??? Enjoyed seeing the Diamond and downtown mall.

Yesterday I had a close encounter with a Trojan called DNSChanger.
Esentially it captures the browser, and freezes it up by changing the IP address in the TCP/IP  Server address .

After multiple system scans with Malware/Security software, I managed to remove most of it and quarentine the rest, but I don't think it's gone completely.
Anyone have any experience with this critter? Ideas.

Any kind of tool that screws with your DNS (domain name services) is pretty much very dangerous. If your system gets tinkered with and starts asking a non authoritative DNS server where to go you may not wind up at the site wou want to go to. (ie this site is at IP address 74.220.215.60. If the trojan alters where it goes to get your DNS resolution thay could very easily sent you to  208.7.138.201 (bitsnpieces.com). Now imagine they did this with your online banking or something else you want to remain private. This particular beastie exists for both windows and Mac's. On windows XP for example this will leave a file called  TC:\WINDOWS\system32\kdune.exe and a folder called BITSIN in your local APPLICATION DATA under your DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folder.  There's a number of variants out there for most of these things as well so this may not be the case for you if you are an XP user.

One of the biggest problems malware presents is that many of them self-rebuild or self install when a systems is restarted. So unless you eliminate the rebuild portion of the malware it will simply come back again. Anyhow there's a number of sites/forums out there that deal specifically with getting rid of malware. Good luck Puff.

NP, it was redirecting searches to places I didn't want to go as you said. I also had music playing that I did not initiate. When I ran a virus scan with Norton, it detected it, and fixed it, but as soon as Norton fixed it, it detected it again. This thing replicated in like 2 seconds. In the meantime the browser (IE) was essentially dead.
What I ended up doing is run Norton, McAfee, Defender all at the same time.
I also found that for a reason I cannot explain the Windows automatic updates tool  was disabled, so the Widows Malicious Software tool was not working.

  ....count your blessings-

....after several weeks of rather fascinating engaging battle, reading, & chatting, I’m getting the impression  there was an intriguing broad-system attack emanating from Asia infecting many machines around the country ....

....over the last month I’ve managed to more or less re-establish control over  my machine, with the emphasis on ‘more or less’, through constant vigilance and proactive monitoring/actions....

.... I have experienced a rather constant seemingly systematic degradation/corruption of my system by an ongoing string of issues occurring, with a ‘new’ one popping up all too suspiciously all too soon after I solved/fixed the previous one....

....over the course of the last month-

....I incurred the aforementioned hijacking/re-directing  bug, which I have regained the upper hand....

....I had my machine arbitrarily shutting down/rebooting every 30 minutes....

....I had the 'fix'  to correct machine arbitrarily shutting down/rebooting every 30 minutes arbitrarily stop working and the machine resumed rebooting on its own every thirty minutes....

....I had my web browser  suddenly refuse to play.....

....my machine no longer can  run one of my photo programs....

....I’ve lost my internet and MEDIA PLAYER sounds; though I have reclaimed my start up/shut down WINDOWS sounds....

....I’m unable to re-start my machine in SAFE MODE as SAFE MODE not longer exists in my system....

....I’m unable to initiate my SYSTEM RESTORE as it too no longer exists in my system....

....and the latest mal-function is my machine no longer talks to my printer....

....on the one hand, the machine is over 5 years old and been running pretty much 24/7, so I have certainly gotten a lot of mileage out of it....

....on the other hand, the machine & programming, being relatively technologically aged, and well-used, was likely quite ripe for the picking and my recent issues were undoubtedly due to the system being infected/corrupted followed by a likely cascading failure of various functions;  a solid carry-over from the old flying/nuclear warfare days- "doo-doo does happen"....

....fortuitously, I do have alternate machines on  separate nets so it’s wasn’t anything that ticked me off, and I’ve rather perversely enjoyed the researching/problem-shooting/tinkering to regain as much as I have on this machine....

....I did get near 6 good years of solid untroubled use out of it, so I can’t complain/bitch and am chalking it up to coloring in my on-going black-magic learning curve; and I’ve yet to call the GEEK SQUAD; and it’s been years since I had to talk to “Richard” in India; though- being the former global treker- I always rather enjoyed those chats with the mid-night shift over on the sub-continent ;D ....

....however-

.... the window of my enlightening exploration of the growing expanses of my system’s challenges/degradation  is drawing to it’s inevitable closing, and it soon is going to be ‘good night Gracie.....’ ;and-

.... we’ll undoubtedly take rather perverse delight physically destroying the hard drive with the 3-pound sledge and rotary grinder out in the shop ;) ....

We're due for a technology refresh here. Everything is about 5 years old as well. I have to fix my wife's windows box. Her registry went corrupt and there are no valid restore points to recover from. Despite my efforts to recover the system I just can't do it. I did stick the drive on another system and copy all the pictures, videos, documents, etcetera off. If it weren't for itunes and pinnacle studio I'd have her on Linux in a heartbeat. But alas no itunes for Linux. You'd think there would be since Mac's are UNIX based, but they won't release one. I can make it run on Linux if need be. The pinnacle is another matter altogether. It's very tied to winderz and getting it to run under wine will take more than "just a little" effort. I  will get my way eventually though.

Puffin, I'm surprised that Norton even detected the thing. Most of the malwarez don't even get picked up by anti-virus scanners.  One of the first items man of these things do is trash windows updates AND antivirus updates. They can screw with the antivirus code much, but they can detour the roads outbound to nowhere though.  Almost all of them will recreate themselves when a system is restarted. It makes them a PITA to get rid of. Once you know it's gone change your passwords on your financial and other sensitive sites as a fail safe. Also make sure your email address is correct.

So my daughter has a car.  It's a 2009 Toyota Corolla.  Cute little thing.  Anyway, it's on the recall list so her dad makes sure she has an appointment at Palmerio while she's home to get it fixed.  They call her while we are out yesterday and tell her that her inspection was due 7 months ago.  Se is befuddled.  So she says can you inspect it?  They tell her yes they can.  We need this, this and this.  She says Mom do I have those?  I say you should.  The lady on the phone says your registration sticker was due LAST MAY.  Sheesh.  I'm of course like WTF.  Do you have your insurance card.  I know for a fact her insurance is paid up cause it comes out automatically and I had called the insurance company about her deployment status for her.    She tells me she thinks it is on her kitchen table.  In New Jersey of course.  So I had to go online to get her registration renewed and a proof of insurance letter.   She says "I had no idea there was so much involved with having a car!"  Then she said the guy at the gate on base has given her a hundred warnings about her sticker......she just smiles pretty and goes on her way......she really didn't know what he was talking about.   Anyway, I'll be sending her back with an inspected and registered car......the whole parenting thing.....my mom was right, it never ends.....

I wasn't so bright either when I was that age. I was told by mechanics that I needed an oil change. I looked at it.... it was thick... and black.... really, really black.... which is how oil is supposed to look right?

I suspected I was being preyed upon by the mechanics, so I never got it changed. Every now and then I would add a quart. It ran fine for a long time.....
