Gore, your experience mirrors mine exactly. I thought I had it beat, but it returned with a vengeance last nite. Seems to manifest itself in a critter called Artemis, and has application extensions called zidakoye.dll, nelezuga.dll, modopis.dll and a few others.
I mentioned it to a friend who showed up this morning and within 1/2 hr had what appears to be a cure.
He used a couple of tools called Avenger and Killbox. New to me. When I asked about them he jsut said he got them from Swandog46. Geeks and their secrets!
You might wanta check it out.

NP, Norton surprised me to. Maybe after what happened last nite i only imagined it helped me.

This is a hangar at Dulles in D.C. with problems caused by snow load

the aircraft from l to r belong to Snoop Dog, Leno, and Hunter Thompson  ;D
Thompsons planes attitude was not caused by snow. Thats just the way he parked it after it's last use.

I wonder whose insurance picks up the tab on that one? Hey, maybe the people that put the new barn up at the fairgrounds will bid on the rebuild? <giggle>

Puffin, you got hijacked plain and simple. IMO that's as bad if not worse than getting a standard garden variety virus. Malware is just plain nasty. Norton's okay on viruses, but this ain't symantecs game.

Well... thank goodness it wasn't the Police Blotter or anything like that! LOL
And it wasn't for my extraordinary spaghetti sauce recipe, or something similar.

I attended a Fair Board meeting and presented an evening of local musicians to the CC Fair Board for consideration, instead of hiring a tribute band or an outsider act.  As a sample of the caliber of local talent right here in our own backyards, Jack Adams (and his guitar) came with me and sang and played one of his ballads that made it to the independant national charts. Jack has a really beautiful voice. He made it to #6 on one song, and #12 on another of his songs some time ago. I wrote a story about him here:  http://www.dirtydoglive.com/jackadams.html

Anyway, Jack graciously agreed to be a part of my presentation, so it got some attention at the meeting. :) I guess the Trib thought it was newsworthy and gave me 15 minutes of fame.

FYI: Here's an interview from 2007 with Lifefeedsonlife: http://www.dirtydoglive.com/navin.html
He's extremely talented, as well as being an amusing EE blogger.

Sounds like winsock.dll got hosed up. Take that back to your geeky friend. If you have a place to mode your important stuff to, I'd get your data off your system and reload it. Better safe than...

Learned the old backup lesson a while back. Lost a couple of years of family photos when a hardfile cratered. I backup to disk at least once a month now.
I'm still workin the MS updates,no success yet, but right now i'm still ahead of the alligator.
Plan B is "Format the disk and reload. The computer equivelant to thermonuclear war, or better yet MAD.

....having spent a career deeply entrenched in the MAD bidness behind several under ground ciphered blast doors, one of the worthwhile lessons gleamed was knowing when to pull the chocks and move productively on....

....and they've now made it way too easy to pull the chocks these days ; a new machine light years over what is currently virally challenging us here in the mile-high command bunker and a new scanner/printer for less than 3 bills..... [/]

That's an interesting little box. It does have "vista" on it though. Upgrading to 7 isn't that much though. I know someone who is actually in need of something like this. I'd build my own, but shoot it's cheaper to buy a pre-built anymore.  I guess I'll go off and do some more research.

Speaking of upgrading, what about Explorer 8? Anyone had any problems with it? I haven't made the switch yet. I find it's always best to wait to see how many patches come out after a newer release.

Well as long as you aren't running IE6. Microsoft know about lots of BIG security issues with IE6 and will not be fixing one of them. I have IE 8 on my Win 7 system ( Still don't use win 7 much though 'cept when I have look at windows applications for people)  I'd still switch to firefox rather than go to IE anything.
