This is not the first picture you’ve seen of the Helix Nebula, but it’s the best image so far. The Helix Nebula is a cloud of gas that was left when a star expired 700 light years away from us.
This image is in the near-infrared, taken using the European Southern Observatory’s Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA), a 4.1 meter telescope in Chile. Equipped with a whopping 67 megapixel camera it can take pictures of large areas of the sky. The Helix nebula fits that bill: it’s close enough to us that it’s nearly the size of the full Moon in the sky.
The feature in the photo is called the "eye of Sauron"

I thought this interesting from a discussion I had on the proposed Military Cuts. Click on the Bar Charts for the Fed column to get a different perspective of the top 5. Take into consideration that Health Care and Pensions do get pay-check contributions from most of the end users..... under programs such as GEHB, FERS, and CSRS... as well as any taxes used in the system.

Interesting how much the budget has gone up over the years. There's a ton of data there that would take a long time to go through. Good stuff, thanks!

Hah! Very cool. I new about a couple of those but others I had no idea. I personally refrain from putting stuff ion the microwave, especially if it doesn't belong there.

There are still blue tarps on roofs here from the 2004 hurricane season. We were all running around the neighborhood cleaning up the big stuff from each others yards, cutting up trees and hauling assorted debris. Other neighborhoods did the same thing and some didn't. The Japanese situation is different, but I wonder how much community involvement they had in the clean up. The tsunami took out a huge chunk of the infrastructure there and the government tossed a lot of resources at it.  I remember a lot of people refused to leave even though they had no job go to.

I spoke with friends in Alaska and they are having one of the roughest winters they can remember since they moved there in the early 60's.  At this very moment in Fort Yukon it's -60 with a projected high of -45 if they are lucky. Several records have fallen and up there aside from the insane about of snow some places have received. February is typically the deep freeze month there so it will be interesting to see what happens. Of course the global warming mantra is that it will get colder before it gets warmer. Climate science is so immature I really don't think they can accurately predict what is really going to happen until it's hindsight.
