Any Parks in Meadville??
« on: September 13, 2009, 08:53:47 PM »
Hi all,

I am pretty sure that I am going to be killing some time in the Meadville area very soon. I do a bit of metal detecting and would like to check out some of the older parks in town. I do not know where any are. I was wondering if someone here might help me out.

Any suggestions and/or street names with parks or any other locations would be very much appreciated.

mike knows every inch of meadvilles parks from when he was a kid, we live within blocks of about three that i can think of. im sure there are more. you have our email still? (my pm dont work on here) send an email and ill ask mike for specifics and email them.  or you if you come into town and mike is available (or you can yank him out of his shop) he can show you right where to go. this town is pretty small and uncomplicated really.

I  would go to the cemetary at the end of Randolph Street.  Love the place, lots and lots of history.

Yes that cemetery is cool.  I would probably also walk around the Baldwin Reynolds grounds too.

I doubt that you would be permitted to dig in many of the historic locations including the cemetary.  ::)

But you can walk into the woods near that cemetery.  It used to be cleared out a bit.   The Huidekooper (sp) place isn't being lived in right?  I'd go dig all up in there! Although since it used to be a fraternity house, you are likely to find more beer bottle caps than anything.

Kimmi, that is still private property and permission should be obtained! There are not many places you can tread upon anymore without permission no matter what is being hunted. I have a very good metal locator too but getting kicked off someones land is no fun. Better get permission. ;D

I've hunted indian artifacts for fifty years and only was turned down by owners three times in fifty years. You can still look for artifacts on the Game Lands but it is illegal to remove them and if caught there is a hefty fine for each arrowhead you remove from said land.  :)

Yep but no one lives there anymore.  Who's going to complain?  The ghosts?

Thanks all for your input!

I have been detecting for about three years now, and within the hobby itself there is an actual code of ethics that the vast majority of hobbyists adhere to. Respect for private property and obtaining permissions are a big part of it.

Cemeteries are a big point of debate within the hobby. A two thousand dollar metal detector still only has a detecting depth of about one foot. You cannot get anywhere near grave depth. For this reason some think that detecting in cemeteries may be OK. I think it comes down to public perception and respect for those interred. I would not consider it at all.

I will admit that properties like the one that Kimmi mentioned are maddeningly tempting....... ;D

I am also always searching for old glass dumps if anyone knows where any are located. It is another compulsion of mine...

Whether the property is or isn't being lived in, someone still owns the property. There is not an inch of ground in the USA that isn't owned by someone. I am a big believer in obtaining permission.   :)
