Middle-of-the night robocalls
« on: September 27, 2009, 05:50:22 PM »
Anybody else get the bone-chilling surprise of a call in the middle of the night last night only to find it was a robocall from some mortgage company? Apparently i wasn't the only one.

Haven't had any of those. I get calls to my cell phone about the warranty on vehicle that is about to expire. The warranty on my truck expired a long time ago. What bugs me is the calls always come up "restricted" and they are difficult to block opr even trace.

Sounds like the area code got plugged into the wrong time zone by the sound of things.

Yes, I got that call despite being on the do-not-call lists.  Something about mortgages.
It came at 4:10 AM today.
The number they were calling from, according to my caller ID, was 211-710-1680.

SOME robo calls were supposed to be banned starting Sept. 1st.   I guess ours was allowed. ::)   But hey, what ever it takes to help out some corporation.

211-710-1680 is a "spoofed" number, which means that whoever called you "tricked" your caller ID to display an incorrect phone number. Telemarketers do this so you cannot complain.  You're not the only area that's been complaining about this number either.

Both my Brother-in-law and my wife's parents received the same call. My mother-in-law answered obviously concerned that something bad had occurred (why else would one get a call at 4 am?). My brother-in law ignored it. We were out at "camp" so were spared the sleep interruption. If I HAD been home I would have let the perpetrator know in no uncertain terms that I would hunt him down no matter the cost or effort and make him rue the day he interferred with my sleep!

It's not entirely a new thing. It's been going on for years. The sources of the calls are almost next to impossible to track down I understand. This is especially true where VoIP calls are concerned.

Here is what I found out.... All exchanges in the area got hit.... and it didn't matter if you were with cable or phone companies. It hit those who were on the DO NOT CALL LIST as well as the others

The Area Code number was traced... 211... to New Jersey and it is used by an outfit that contracts with Businesses to the Robocalling. Now what has to happen is that the servers have to approach the LAW on this and do their best to prosecute.

I stand by my statement, 211 is not a valid area code.

There is a 201 in New Jersey, but not a 211 anywhere in North America.
