anybody else having trouble with zoominternet speeds?
« on: October 29, 2009, 08:46:00 PM »
Ever since late August, out zoominternet service from Armstrong stinks...it used to be great, now, it's really going slow....every time we call, they check something, have us reboot the modem, and then it takes off again, sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours....they asked me to call next time it happened, before I reset the modem, and I did, but they still can't find anything....I think they did something down the road, about the same time this started, they had a guy in a bucket truck down the road at some sort of distribution box, but of course, they say they didnt change a thing.....anyone else having trouble?

Is Zoom DSL or cable?

....just a suggestion;

....bring up your WINDOWS TASK MANAGER window (usually simultaneous Ctrl/Alt/Delete) and monitor your CPU USAGE & PF USAGE under the PERFORMANCE tab; I keep mine up  just partially off the right of the screen w/the 2 left windows showing to keep an eye on the #s....

....I've established my machine has a capacity limit where it can bog down and when the PF USAGE starts approaching the threshold I close my windows out to clear the load to avoid the now-know predictable bog down....

....I've also established a baseline of required programs running under the PROCESSES tab, and when something pops up on the list that isn't on the base line (my norm is 34 processes while surfing), usually behind the scenes sucking up PF USAGE, I've learned which ones I can terminate using the END PROCESS tab on the bottom of the WTM window....

....I'm on Comcast cable and only have the bog-down issue w/the desk top here; the laptop has no issues when wifi'ing through the  modem; and Sis has no issues with her machine wifiing when she visits....

....might help, might not; it's all black voodoo :P particularly to a nail and hammer guy....

you know what now that you mention it... we have to reboot the router (wired one) a lot.. not the cable modem but the router... and we have zoom cable isp

it does not get slow, it just .. becomes totally non responsive, you cant  even talk to the rouer on the special "router number" address, no way to connect at all. then reboot the router... its all ok till next time.

Cable is a "shared" resource. Often if you get a person that is a bandwidth hog and is downloading lots of movies, music, etc they can impact your available bandwidth. I don't know how up to date Armstrongs network equipment is either.

There's a lot of possibilities.

....Sis & the BIL had the same issue w/Armstrong, as did when Tig visited and wifi-ed on their system....

....Tig was good for at least 2 modem re-sets/day when he was on the system solo using the lap top when they were at work....

....they finally dumped Armstrong and signed up w/a new cable provider and no more problems....

I live 1/2 mile from a Verizon terminal and have been very happy with their DSL. I have friends with Time Warner and they are slowly dumping their cable internet for Verizon DSL and when they get on... they tell me they see why I never got the cable modem system... Seems the Raodrunner has a busy coyote on his feathered arse.

hmm. oh well. not a giant deal for me really. i suppose i can hit the reset button. lol.  as far as i know there are no alternate cable or fios providers here. the only alternative for us is windstream dsl. that is out for us as we were told it would interfere with the box that talks to mikes defibrillator every night and then transmits to cleveland if need be, it does this not by actual dialup. it is hooked up to our phone line and is incompatable with many dsl modems i guess.

I have had Zoom (when I lived up in Lake) but they don't have it out here.  We have Windstream DSL on the desktop and have been very pleased with it.  It's actually better than Zoom IMO.  Fewer issues.  Good service.  I use a Verizon express card on the laptop and couldn't be happier.  Wish I could get the Verizon DSL out here in the sticks.

That's the thing. There is NO reason that you should have to reboot a piece of comm gear. I haven't touched mine in over 18 months and it works fine. I never had to do it with DSL either. The brief period I have cable internet though I was endlessly screwing around on the phone with the cable company here. Their level one support was worthless, level two was close to that and level three was okay, but it took forever to get ahold of them. I could go on for long time about this because I have to support programmer and systems architects for a living. It pisses me off to no end when I get someone on the phone who has a much business doing their job as I do flying the apace shuttle.

Sorry... I'm just tired and cranky I guess.
