MMC buys the mall?
« on: November 26, 2009, 07:41:27 AM »
So MMC bought the mall? That's an interesting turn. I wonder when they plan on beginning development or wil they just sit on the property?

From goerie.com:

Officials at the Meadville Medical Center have announced their purchase of the 47-acre site off Conneaut Lake Road in Vernon Township. The site sits across the highway from the hospital's Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute, which opened in spring of 2008.

The hospital intends to use the site for future development of outpatient services, but that development is unlikely to begin within the next few years, hospital officials said in a news release announcing the transaction.

The property has been mostly vacant since the end of 2008, when Michael Joseph Development Corp. of Wexford demolished the once-thriving 200,000-plus-square-foot mall southwest of Meadville. A Kmart store that was once attached to the mall remains as a free-standing store on the mall property.

It was not immediately known if Kmart will be impacted by the hospital's purchase.

It will always be referred to as "where the mall used to be".

We really need some retail action....great that the hospital is expanding services, but there is another entity that will not be paying taxes and boost the tax base. I was so hoping for a Kohls or Target or something....nuts!

If (when)  it expands it will provide jobs in the medical field, which are usually high paying. Time to take that course in radiology or physical therapy.

Jobs, jobs, jobs.  That's cool.  And anything to fill in that big void at the top of the hill....it looks so desolate there all this time.

Actually it makes sense. The population has shifted towards the lake over the years. So taking the services to the population is more beneficial than taking the population to the service in many cases.

I'm sure this has been in the planning for quite a while. Prolly why the mall owner was in such a hurry to raze the buildings. Hospitals are non profit? I doubt that the way it costs just for a short stay!
Are they going to have to replace that little wetlands? They won't be paying taxes. Vernon residents,,,,,hang on to your wallets! ::)

Meh - more service industry work.

We really need more industry industry work.

The industry-industry work is going to China. We all know who to thank for that.

Good point.

We are a large part of the problem, but not solely responsible. Those running the business empires must share part of the blame as well. The disposable thing kills me. Why, because in many cases disposable is more expensive.

Okay, so at least there's the possibility of some new jobs being create in the future. We all know the rust belt needs a shot in the arm...

Nope, I didn't intend the pun but thanks for pointing it out.  Evidently my grey matter is not generating enough neural impulses this morning.
