For You Readers Out There
« on: December 31, 2009, 03:18:24 PM »
Hi all,

I was apparently a particularly good boy this year (having a hard time justifying that) and was given an Amazon Kindle for Christmas. I have been running this thing to death since last weekend and it is an incredible device. If any of you are serious readers I recommend it highly. Does anyone else have one?

Now what am I going to do with the piles of books that I own?  ???

Mr R

(maybe this should have gone in the consumer section, please feel free to move it if so NP!)

Can you explain what that is?

I like the idea of it, but there is just something about browsing the book store and holding a book in my hands that would steer me away from a Kindle.  I do have friends who love theirs.

Life it is basically like an electronic book that can hold thousands of books.  They are fairly flat and are about the same size as a regular book.  People like them because they fit in brief cases and purses.

"....try wiping your hiney with a couple pages from one ;) ...."      I'm with you Sir Gore.  Also from a VISION point of view, a Kindle can strain the eyes more than reading a book.  The text on a Kindle, and on a computer screen affects the accommodative (focus) system of the eyes in ways that create eyestrain for many people.  The increased eyestrain can then lead to increases in nearsightedness and also some imbalances in the binocular (2 eyed) system of those who are susceptible.

I agree on the holding the book thing, but when the closest decent book store is 40+ miles away, and my reading tastes do not typically make mass market paperback ($$) the Kindle is a great thing. Near instantaeous access to reading material appeals to me in BFE. Besides, I already read all five of the books in our local library... ;D

And gore, they make special paper for that application these days... ;)

Now, back to that riveting CLP thread. ::)

I got a similar device for my son.  Did not know if investing that much into the actual Kindle was wise just yet.  I forget what kind his is but he really likes it.   Takes it everywhere.  He has loaded several classics on it.....Frankenstein and stuff....well worth a couple hundred bucks.  Glad to have a first hand critique though.  Enjoy!

I have the Sony Reader. I agree with you that is is , well, the next best thing since the printing press.
I am one of those that has 3-4 books going at the same time, but now I do it without the clutter, with all in one compact place.
Mr. R. I don't think its the end of the Gutenberg era yet, but, maybe like newspapers, it is being challenged.
A friend who got one several months ago, quit smoking to justify buying the online books. He says he isn't saving any money, nor better looking, but he's healthier, and thanks to the added reading material, marginally smarter.
And he doesnt have to get those built in bookcases the old lady has been pestering him for years.

I read some similar story recently about the increase in the amount of kids with eyesight problems and those "in the know" are linking it to texting and cell phone use, sighting (no pun intended) eye strain from using the small devices and focus issues.

Oh brother.

What if they were straining their eyes due to an increase in math homework, or reading the small text in required school books. I guess it would be OK then, right?

Aside from Gore's obvious reasoning, if they have a storage device for music, why not something for e books?

Mr. Zip listens to recorded books while he's working or driving. He's enjoyed that for many years now.

I got my wife a Kindle for Christmas. I miss her.

E-readers are very very cool. Imagine college students carrying around a Kindle instead of 30 pounds of books all across campus.

here's a video of the Kindle: according to the advertisement it can hold 1500 books. The one I have holds 350.

The kindle allows you to adjust the font size. Helpful for us in the "my eyesight is failing" club.

Yep, there's a number of schools that have gone that route. It's a trend that will continue I suspect. I expect my kids school to be going that route eventually.
