Word on the street is that the Wave wants to move into the former Suburban restaurant.  I wish them luck.  It's kind of ironic that the owner of the previous restaurant in that space had an aversion to paying bills too (click here).
It will be fun to see how Hermitage deals with a sewer deadbeat restaurant that may or may not have a liquor license from week to week (that is, provided the move actually comes to pass).
Why they're closing the existing restaurant without a new location readied to open (or even a confirmation of a new site) is beyond me.  Anyone with a lick of business sense (hell, a lick of COMMON sense) knows that's an excellent way to lose one's customer base.

Not to mention most of your staff. Come to think of it, they'll probably have to pay unemployment in the meantime, too.

I went to eat there about a month ago and really enjoyed it.  Too bad I won't be going back again... >:( .  I guess its back to Ferrara's for Italian food.

That's the spirit!  Frankly, I wish Ferrara's were downtown.

Well, the inevitable "Goodbye Wave" article was in today's Business Chronicle.  The owner cites "changing economic conditions and a sense of needing to move on" as the reason for closing, but I think that's bull.  IMO, the Wave is closing for one (or both) of these reasons:
1.) Sour grapes over the Sharon Sanitary Authority's lawsuit, and/or2.) The IRS will soon be swooping in and seizing a lot more than the liquor license this time around.
The article was an odd mixture of farewells to customers and reassurances that the restaurant will reopen soon in a new location.  I would be willing to bet a pizza from Ferrara's that the Wave will never reopen, in the Suburban plaza or anywhere else.
A lot of people are up in arms about this, some even going as far as to say it's the death of Sharon (oh please).  The closure of the Wave has two possible outcomes, and neither is really THAT bad.  Either East State Street gets another empty building (seriously, what's ONE more at this point?) on which the Arena family will still be responsible for taxes and utilities without any profits; or we'll get a new business that might actually (gasp!) PAY ITS BILLS.  Gee, sounds survivable to me.

I think that its a mental thing for people, with the Wave closing/moving.  I forgot that I have a ticket for the Habitat for Humanity fundraiser there on Wednesday, the last night for the Wave downtown.  I'll have to make sure not to enjoy the adult beverages too much and decide to tell any available Wave official what I think of their plan to head to the sprawland of Walmart, etc.  On a different note, I went to the Market City Bistro on Sunday and it was great.

I KNEW IT!

(I promise this is my LAST post on the Wave... ;) )

Found out yesterday on good authority that the Wave closed because of a pile of delinquent loans and sewer fees.  Look for their building to be turned over to PNC Bank in the near future.

I wish them luck securing financing for a move...needless to say, I hope their mysterious "interest holders" (like the Mudrinich character in this article who just couldn't resist the urge to bash the city that sustained the restaurant for SIXTY-THREE YEARS) have independently deep pockets.

I'd be interested to find out what exactly Bob Lucas was doing when he "did all he could to help the Wave."  I would assume they were getting the same sweetheart treatment that slumlords extraordinaire Joe Toth and Levio Baldarelli were also receiving.

Although it's always sad to see a longtime business go, at this point I'm pretty much happy to say "Don't let the door hitcha where the Lord splitcha!"

i've heard that some of their employees or owners have blamed everyone but themselves for their plight, as if the city or the newspaper didn't pay their taxes or their sewer bill or their mortgage or the renewal on their liquor license. Wait till they find out Hermitage has sewer bills and taxes -- and doesn't mess around when they're due.

the tears i shed for the loss of the downtown institution start to dry up when i realize the restaurant fate is the result of actions by the owners themselves, not outside forces or Acts of God.

He appears to be a local lawyer. In all the farewell discussion, it's never been clarified who or what owns the business anymore.

Probably something like using clumps of leftover, starchy pasta to patch potholes throughout the city? Supplying the official soup for the next wedding the mayor officiated? Voluntarily letting others park in their private parking garage under the library?

Looks like the powers-that-be are going to to force the issue. The herald reported today that 550 customers will get shut off if they don’t pay up.

It's about time.  I know there are people who are struggling right now, but I would estimate that at least 75% of the delinquent accounts in Sharon are held by people who WON'T pay rather than CAN'T pay.

Also, the Wave came up as a topic on Joe Biro's Comedy Hour this morning during my commute...apparently someone's fed him a new line-of-bullcrap story that they closed and planned to move because "the building can't keep up with today's fast-paced crowd." ::)

... planned to move because "the building can't keep up with today's fast-paced crowd." ::)

Much of that "fast-paced crowd" consisted of weekly luncheons with the Girls of the Class of '47, who had to use the front door because the side door had 2 steps to climb.

HA!  If the "partners" (still unnamed) are going to make up lies to feed to gullible local talk radio hosts, you'd think they'd at be plausible.

I would be willing to bet that's much more than an opinion!

"Moving update" from the Wave's facebook page (I'm not a fan):

The Wave Italian Restaurant is still looking for it's (sic) new home in the valley. At this time nothing has been finalized, but we are hopeful we will have a new location in the coming weeks. Once we know for sure where we are going, we will be sure to let our loyal customers know. We sincerely thank all our patrons who came down to the restaurant one last time during the month of March and shared one last meal with us at our Sharon location.

It goes on to provide a lengthy description of their catering services (where are they making the food?).
That was on April 14, nothing since then...some of the responses to this post were quite interesting, but not surprisingly, they've since been deleted.
