Ours is a state fair so it is much larger, but we have had celebrity chefs come in like Paula Dean and Bobby Flay.  But I like the idea of a rib or chili cookoff.  Maybe it could be a battle of the fire departments!!  Some of the proceeds could go to the winning fire dept.

It's kind of hard to compare a state fair to a county fair. The CC fair is the largest in Pa I think. I'm sure there's a lot of thing that could be done to draw crowds, however isn't it still predominantly and agricultural fair?

It is an agricultural fair, the largest in the state, and the board takes their job very seriously.

My faith in the bands, their level of professionalism and their talent will let them shine that night and provide a venue and hopefully a precedent to allow some good changes to be made for future CC fairs. My main concern would be bad weather, which could easily influence attendance. That's one thing about paying for a larger ticket national act. People will come and sit in the rain so as not to lose their $50 (per ticket) expense.

I don't know what the tractor pulls do if it's a bad thunderstorm during their time slot. Has anyone here attended a scheduled grandstand event and had it thunderstorm, or know of a similar occurrence?

Some folks think the word "local" means West Virginia and New York.

Local
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/local

#3)) pertaining to a city, town, or small district rather than an entire state or country

We have exceptional local talent right here... musicians way too accomplished to participate in a "contest" among themselves. The guys here work together, not against each other.

Inexperienced bands may compete for recognition. Seasoned vets know the way to do things. Froggy can search for talent, but won't find anything better than what I have in my hand to present to the Board and the community at the fair.

And, this radio station doesn't support any of the locals by playing their music on the radio, and in fact has snubbed the local artists who have tried. They don't even know who is here. They don't go and listen to them perform, or showcase them on their radio programming.

Cool 101.7 does. And they are standing behind me. The Trib did not report that.
And so does WXCS in Cambridge Springs.

I don't see how this can be anything other than big radio promoting themselves, and using the "idea" of local talent to do it. Because West Virginia and New York is not "local". Regional, maybe, but not "local".

With me, it's about the musicians, not me. I didn't propose a "Dirty Dog Live" event. I proposed an "American Jam" featuring many of the best local bands we have to offer, in all the different genres where each band would excel. Bluegrass, Gospel, Rock, Country, Acoustics, Americana, Classic Rock, Southern Rock, and so much more. Froggy only wants to do country.

I am still hopeful that the Board will support the local bands and the community, and give them an opportunity to show off our best, which really, are just as good as the big name acts they present each year.

To paraphrase a biblical passage a bit: "A band is not without honor, except in their hometown and among their local radio stations and in their own counties."

You gots to go away to gets famous.

I've thought that for years. WUZZ (before they were WUZZ) used to play local cuts here and there on Friday nights and then announce where the bands were gigging on the weekends. It was cool - but short lived. That was in '99 or so. We actually had quite a few folks come to hear us as a result of that. (As did other bands.)

As it stands now - it's not so much about music so much as it's about profit. Can't say as I blame anyone for that though . . . even small stations like WXCS need operating funds. Cool 101.7 is a great local asset. (I like the fact they're not owned by a larger group.) I don't know if they'd be into playing a band like Skudd though.

I think more and more locals are producing radio worthy professional quality Cds now than before. Studios are more available and affordable. WXCS's Sam and Frank have a studio right in Cambridge Springs, and I know of others locally, and many up in Erie. It's better for the bands now, especially with digital sound and distribution, and venues like YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, etc... though tougher to shine among the vast endless sky.

In fact, you've had songs worthy of radio play. You know my favorite. I would still like to hear it sometime. ???

We're woodshedding a bit. Re-working our set lists and we have a new guitarist. We're still doing a lot of the horn based tunes - but we're also playing more 90's alt stuff right now. (cuz that's who's out at the bars these days.)
