new school construction
« on: March 09, 2010, 10:05:03 AM »
Since we will be losing the current Case Ave. school building for a new structure, I thought that this was interesting.  Probably similar to what lies ahead for us.  Very sad.  Follow the link below...

No schools seem to be getting windows these days. There's a lot of speculations as to why too. And... no, they are not pretty.

It seems to me that with the trend toward no windows in schools, they should just build it underground which would certainly help with heating in the winter and cooling in the summer (fairly constant 50-55 degrees). The ground above the school could then be used as greenspace!

That depends on the soil conditions. Then there's also that radon gas thing that underground homes are prone to.

hell, why'd we even bother taking the stone, etc. out of the ground in the first place, we could have built society completely underground.

Soil condition certainly factors in but the Radon issue can be ameliorated by the use of appropriate exhaust systems. It certainly would be safer if another F4 or F5 tornado ever hit the area.  The construction could be easily performed after appropriate excavation by using precast and insulated concrete walls (several systems are available). Just food for thought!

Case will be challenging because there is the potential that its present site will be a big, ugly parking lot with the school (in whatever form it takes) set back away from the natural building location along the street.

if you want to see f'ugly school architecture, visit the new Warren G. Harding HS over in Warren, Ohio. It's a bland, sprawling building with an entrance flanked by 2-story token columns that look like PVC sewer pipe.

the entrance was in homage to the four-story limestone Corintian columns and neoclassic architecture of a commanding 1920s building that stretched proudly down  both sides of a flat-angle intersection on a major entrance to the city. That area is now lawn and parking and a grew view of the back of a previously hidden stadium grandstand.

oh, and preservationists originally got the school board to set aside money to preserve and keep using a couple hundred feet of the facade along with some office rooms and a functional auditorium behind them. Great idea.

But at the last minute, the board decided -- against community desires -- instead to save only about a 50x100 chunk of facade, seal the sides and back in fake stucco, and leave it sitting in the front lawn as a monument to absurdity.

When I lived in Laredo, Tecas, my elementary school was under a mound, grasses and shrubs all over it. It was like a cave, no windows, very cool. like buck rodgers cool, and cool inside....

That's the other books I'm reading! I acquired the Lord of the Rings trilogy along with Stranger in a Strange Land. I LOVED the movie and had never read the books, so I am going to read them before I watch it again.

I liken myself to the elf Legolas more than a hobbit, but I like where both live, WITH the earth...

You have to wonder about the kind of person who would build a beautiful house but would choose to spend many of his waking hours in some form of windowless, reinforced, underground "man cave". Probably the kind kinda guy who would have a wall full of weapons in his underground bunker as well...

Here's the Case architect's website.  Their portfolio doesn't offend me--the school buildings have windows, at least.

Welcome back, p.j.n.!  I seem to remember that you were one of the few sane voices from the old Herald Impugn-ity Forum, and I hope you'll stick around and breathe some life into this place.  ;D

Hey, it's not dead here. It's been picking up gradually (very gradually unfortunately). It's always good to have people post. Posting incites more posting and that's good!
