A bright idea in sharon
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:22:58 PM »
Now that we have someone in charge who sees sharon from an outsider's/newcomer's perspective, some interesting ideas are coming from city hall.

the city manager's latest observation is that sharon is paying more for street lighting than several valley towns combined; that it is paying a flat annual fee for scores of lights that aren't even working; and that some streets have so many excess light fixtures that they can be seen from space.

the plan is to get all the lights lit, survey the streets at night, and shut off excess lights to save some significant bucks.

sounds like a decent plan. Some streets -- like the newly renovated shenango ave, chestnut street and vine avenue -- have incredible wattage. Meanwhile, around the corner on the key downtown blocks of east state street there are so many missing or burned out lights that it looks like a dark alley. And there's several ornamental lights throughout the downtown that have been knocked over or broken off for years, leaving bolts and wires sticking out of the sidewalk.

if the new guy can remedy these flaws and save money at the same time, more power to him.

That kind of thinking doesn't come from politicians. He may not even be the onw who had the idea, but it sounds like he's doing something with it. Maybe he'll even put in some Lunar Resonant Streetlights too.

Here is my thought on this....

I live in an area of Sharon that is in dire need of more lighting but.... hopefully someone doesn't think it is "to much". If they are doing this to be able to hire more police..... maybe, just maybe... it won't be enough police one the lights are turned off or down. An old addage is that cockroaches love the dark and scatter when light is upon them, has some truisms.

I learned many years ago that CHANGE for CHANGE sake, isn't, too often, the answer.

One thing that low or no lights will do.... make it harder to see the scabs of abandoned homes and buildings we have in this city so now they will only be observed during the day.... unless he figures out a way to dim the sun.

He has a delicate job to do... similar to removing a tumor from the brain.... if you do it slow and deliberate... it may be a success but...if you start slashing from all angles.... you will end up with the patient having to continue to wear a helmet and fall down even more. We have problems "UNDER the SURFACE of the skin" that need corrected... in mind.... why is over 1/3 of our city RENTAL??? How much of that is SCUM LORD created? The list of POOP TAX AVOIDERS has left the HERALD.... and where are we at in getting those who owe ...to pay... Seems now a business has closed while owing thousands and they make front page news in the Herald. DOHH!!!!!

So... we go at the POOP TAX AVOIDERS then the abandoned Ohio Cars ( I thought you had to get your plates changed after so long in residence in PA ... on vehicles still being used) and now Street Lights..... Our city manager has a daunting job ahead of him. I just hope while he is in there cutting out the tumors that he doesn't destroy any of the good tissue. IMHO

Jayhawk, I didn't mean to go off topic and I apologise. I just figured it is a Sharon thread and someone might know the answer to my question.  ???

there's a whole subsection for sharon discussion, which is where it belongs. I just found it one of the oddest and most sudden topic shifts i've seen in a while.

I should have replied "yeah, at that place downtown.  Turn at the burned-out light"

Ko-Shin,
I would love to meet you and any others who are interested. Coordinating a larger get-together may be difficult given the, I am sure, busy schedules of everyone these days.

To get back on topic, I guess I would take the middle ground.  I feel there are a lot of areas of town where lights could easily be reduced, but there are other areas where increased lighting would be a good idea.  As long as the "pruning" is done intelligently and not with a slash-and-burn mentality, I don't really see any potential for problems.

I wonder whether with the increased efficiency of solar panels these days if that may be an alternative power source for many of the old lights or new lights placed given the upcoming electric deregulation (with subsequent rate increases)

I have done some research on this, and there are viable lighting units available right now, a little pricey, but once installed they are off the grid.
