Need some help.....
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:40:48 AM »
First off.... no.... this isn't life and death...

Once a year we have what is named "Remembrance & Reflections". This is for Mercer County and all who want to support. What is done ( this year is the 15th year) is to have a ceremony at the Mercer County Vietnam Veterans Memorial, on the East side of the Mercer County Courthouse. It lasts about an hour. In that time, there will be a few speeches but most of the ceremony is the recitation of each Mercer County man's name, killed in the Vietnam War. As the name is recited, a rose is taken to the Memorial and layed at it's base. What we try to do is have a Family member, escorted, take the rose and place it in their loved ones honor. If no family is there, a friend does it. If none step forward..... a Veteran or one who wants, can do it in their stead. ALL are honored.

The program is unique as we have the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteers ( Reenactors of the Civil War ) as the Honor Guard. As the name is said, a drummer does a roll until the rose is placed. This year a Cub Scout Group will be present to help and to learn. This is open to all... Veterans, their families, and anyone who cares to spend the time with us to honor our Men.

The help that is needed, comes in this way.... aside from your open invite to attend, over the years the parents of the men have passed on slow but sure. Their siblings move and it is hard to contact any family members to let them know of this ceremony. We ask that if you know of any family members of those who were killed in Vietnam from Mercer County, would you please give them the information or send any information to the MCVEVA at...

What a beautiful and honorable thing to
do.  I wish I had the time to help out,
as I know how much it would have meant
to have that done for my Dad, a proud
WWII man.  God bless all of you for
doing this.

To those who served during that time... today, thirty-five years ago, 30 April 1975, the Vietnam War came to a "questionable" end. Our Government took off on the last flight off the roof and thus the last Serviceman was killed in Vietnamwithin that time. A U S Marine was the last casualty on Vietnamese soil.

I remember the day.... I had left in 1971,,, and later volunteered to go back in 1972,  but was refused the assignment. I was sitting at my desk in the Communications Center at Schofield Barracks ( Closest I could get to SVN ). I was what they called, a "Trick Chief" for my shift... basically the Supervisor. I was called to the breakroom by one of my team and it had the video of the last of the pull out. I had known for a while, that when Ford ended up folding to Congress and their plan to no longer send the PROMISED help in money and supplies to SVN, that the end was coming. I remember watching and had to walk away and out of the Comm Center to the back of the building, where I had tears for the parents of those who died and a cigarette to calm myself and go back in to finish the shift. Not one on my team knew what I had to do. Sometimes this day and Jan 27 of each year has me going through my memorabilia. I actually found 2 of my lighters the other day, one with my Unit Insignia on one side and a map of Vietnam on the other and another one that has "USO SAIGON" one one side. I haven't smoked in over 20 years but these lit a lot of the ones I did.

So..... to those who "walked that mile"...

WELCOME HOME AND REMEMBER !!!!!

No need to thank, just keep in mind what is going on as we speak. It was fitting today..... We in Mercer County, have a damned nice Veterans Clinic on Kerrwood in Hermitage ...across from Kraynaks. We just got a block of white Granite set in front of the flagpoles. It is simple but says it all. On the Bronze Plaque are 6 words.... "All Gave Some, Some Gave All" . A fitting way to remember this date.

Downtown Sharon????? Not..... I saw fresh flags up there a few days ago... In fact I went inside to inform them the POW-MIA flag was on Upside down. But then again... my eyes and memory aren't what they were....

I understand... when you get my age, Days become minutes and weeks become days...etc. Life is like a roll of toilet paper.... when you first put it on the dispenser it rolls slow and easy when you pull to use....but as you use... it gets smaller and rolls faster.... "so goes the days of our lives" LOL

I hate to have to compare my life with a roll of toilet paper, but it's a good analogy.

Lifetime, if you were toilet paper they'd have taken you off the market years ago because you don't take shit off of anybody.

Lifetime, you may want to tell your veteran friends about this event coming up also. It's in honor of a fallen Navy SEAL, SOC Lance M. Vaccaro. All of the net proceeds go to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation (Navy Seals) .

It's going to be quite an event, with a bike run from Street Track and Trail (leaving at noon, sign up starts at 10:30 am) to Sprague Farm, led by Jake Banta (Jake's Blues), and then a POW MIA tribute to open the concert.

For more info about the event go to: www.DirtyDogLive.com and click on the calendar date of June 20th.

For more info about the Ride for Lance go to www.ride4lance.com

You're right, lifetime, i looked today: New flags, both upright, though for some reason the POW-MIA one is wrapped around the pole just like the old one was.

It must have just happened... I saw both flapping yesterday.... maybe the wind did it.... Even the big one at Perkins in Hermitage was in a bad way from the wind... I told the manager that it was getting shredded and looked like it was snagged and looking mor like a sail that a flag.... I was told that the Sharon PO doesn't buy flags ahead of time so they get them one at a time. I reminded them that wasn't a good way to handle their bottom line.... If you choose to buy a 4 pack of TP and you use that much each week... you should have bought a 24 or 48 pack to eliminate the trip.... no matter what, the TP gets used. People do strange things to make them think they are saving money.
