Looking for work please keep us in mind
« on: April 27, 2010, 12:20:47 AM »
My hubby lost his job when the company that he worked for downsized and rolled two jobs into one. He had less senority. He has a lengthy background in marketing, esp in healthcare. If you see anything within an hour's drive--north, south, east or west, please keep us in mind and send me a message along with the info. He is puttering around the house and he needs to get back to work. I figured that this was just one more way of networking...always good to throw a few lines into the water and see what comes. You never know! Thansk in advance.

Meadville? Honestly, look as far as Pgh. It's only 90 miles, closer to the Northside. MANY more opportunities. I used to commute to Grove City from Erie, 77 miles one way in the winter.

YA - HOO!!!

Erie is close but their economy is in the tank.

Cleveland? 86 miles  ;D

Hey, if he gets the right salary.....

Good luck, just keep hammering with the applications, and every day his job is to find a job.

I will pray for y'all too.

One can always create their own job too.
Start a marketing business. Find a need and try to fill it.
Sometimes when one door closes, another opens, so if he's not doing anything else, try researching into something he loves to do to find a need, whether it's sports, or gardening.

Vantage in Meadville is pretty healthy.  Lot of employees in their new building on S. Main Street (old Talon building site).  I would check it out if I was you.

Thank you for the insight and encouraging words...I have been hepling him search and we are looking all around--about 1 hr in each direction. He has commuted to Erie for years and is not afraid to drive. He likes the time in the car to listen to talk radio and unwind. Me--I find driving stressful.

He has some business ideas that he is kicking around---if you are a praying person please include him/us in your prayers. We almost lost our home this winter and God spared us from that. I am working two part time jobs and just accepted a full time one so that will help.

When is this economy ever going to get better? Or will it even get better? Is our country forever doomed to lose its middle class? We have slid from middle class to poverty right qucik...geez. It is hard not to get discouraged.

olive, as you may know, i have been(still clawing back) down that road. it is VERY hard work to even try to make it work. however once you start the hard work, things happen! alot of people may say wow aren't you lucky, while they sit on their butt hoping for the better. since you  & hubby are doing the work, you become lucky!!! yes good things do come to those who wait, but the early bird does get the worm!! i know it's corny, but is true!! good luck in your search!!! even i have been thinking of trying to find a retired salesperson to market my business, albiet on a commission basis?

I had to laugh--my uncle told me that every time I fall into a pile of sh#t, I come out smelling like a rose in terms of finding work. He seems to think it has every thing to do with luck. I reminded him that I went to college for a loooong time, that I networked a lot, that I have been in one area for almost 20 years, that I do well at my job, that I sent out about 30 resumes to find the job that I wanted, that I practiced my interview skills and researched the companies before I went to interview and that (my belief) God has a hand in helping me out. I always believed that you can pray for food but you better pray with a plow in your hand. :)

If you need someone to do marketing, please consider sending me a PM and I would love to chat with you. Thanks :)

A lot of people don't get that.  That statement alone tells me luck has nothing to do with it.  :)

Tell your husband to sign up at CareerLink in Meadville.  I work at the Unemployment Office and when employers call with jobs we send them there.  Also you can use their computers and fax machines for free.  You can also mail resumes there for free.  Check their links, they also post jobs there too.

http://www.nwpacareerlink.org/crawford/

Check all of the locations at the top.  Erie might post a job that Crawford might not.

Also sign up for civil service jobs.

 http://www.scsc.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/civil_service_home/9164

Up until recently the Unemployment office was hiring quite a few people.  Take a few civil service tests and get on the lists.  Check back because they are always adding new positions.

This economy has been brutal to everyone across the board.  In one of the training classes there were 3 with master degrees and 2 doctorates.

Good luck!

Are there any local programs that offer retraining or further education to those whom have been laid off? My hubby has a degree in Communications but is a whiz working with computers. To get anything in that field you need a degree in that field. We were wondering if he would qualify for any retraining program. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks :)

CareerLink is part of the Dept of Labor & Industry that helps with re-employment.  They could best answer any questions you have on available funds for re-training.  Now a days you have to be open to all opportunities, rather than focusing on just one.  Keep in touch with CareerLink, when employers call me with jobs, thats where I send them.  The state is offering employers incentives to hire through them.

Good luck!
