Oil Spill
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:23:11 PM »
Anyone have an opinion? It looks real bad for the gulf right now. I don't care about the beaches as much as I do the fragile ecosystems that provide much of the US with cheap and plentiful seafood.

It just sickens me to see the pictures. I honestly can't look.

The dead zone at the mouth of the Mississppi ain't good either. I'd read they have one leak stopped.

I thought the government's response to such a disaster was supposed to be a burn?

Unfortunately it's pretty much up to the wind right now. I don't think there's any really good information on where its really going to land. No matter what, we're screwed. I wonder if the environmentalists think Bush was any smarter now because he refused to let go of those offshore leases.

Seems in 1994 they were suggested to get the booms.  Sad that there was only one in the United States and we have to purchase/borrow from other countries.

Well, two things have been reported:

1) The "top-kill" process has stoped the oil... for now
2) The Gulf oil spill has eclipsed the Exxon Valdez in terms of oil volume that escaped into the water.

Sickening. They should have done the top kill immediately. Why didn't they? They still wanted to try to salvage the oil. It's been over a month. If BP ceases to exist as a company I don't care.

At least no oil has hit Fl, although everyone thinks it has.

Here is what I have found in all of this...... More than 5000 wells are or have been drilled in the Gulf Area.... some shallower or close to the depth of this one.... And ONE blew out.... kinda like saying that Air Travel is the safest but...when a plane does crash...it takes MANY.....

Next.... watching the Admins right hand doesn't allow watching the left hand too much.... While this drama unfolds and fingers fly...the Obama Administration has given out at least 2 permits to drill wells at over the 9000 foot level.... Hmmmmm And they say they have moratorium on Alaska Drilling an some deep water drilling.... WTF??

Who is the enemy in all of this? ??? We will find out when the dust  (mud) settles and the blame game begins. I am one who tries not to listen to the lips as opposed to what is done with the hands.

Add to this that the Admin wants to claim millions more acerage of land for itself. The US Government now OWNS 1/3 of the Landmass of the USA. And looking at the maps of where they own is prime Oil or Mineral areas.... You take your own time to figure that out...  ::) ... I do believe we are now just seeing how bad we are being SCAMMED by those we "voted" for. I have my answers... you gotta find yours I guess.

While living in Alaska I learned to distrust the Feds. What they say and what they do are different things. But they can always justify what they did by interpreting their words in their way. Yes they Feds own a LOT of land. Much of which is off limits to the general population for one reason or another. It's interesting how the current adminstration said drill where the previous one said "no". they don't seem to want to stand by some of their previous decisions which sends a pretty clear message to me.

No doubt the axe of accountability will fall on someone or some entity.I'm very curious who will get to be the scapegoat as the real accountability should be shouldered by many more than will get tagged with it. So we are a t a crossroads agin. Will we spend out time on figuring out "who screwed up" or "what's screwed up". My money is on the former.

Whats pretty clear is that booms are not real effective if you get any kind of wave action.

Also clear is that it doesnt matter how many wells are out there that are not a problem. It only takes one that is a problem to create an immense disaster.

Hurricanes are one day events. They hit, then the cleanup begins. Tornado's are events measured in minutes.
This is a totally different in that it is an event spread over days , weeks and maybe months. Any real cleanup cannot be effective until the event ends, and the oil stops flowing. How to do that is a huge engineering problem that nobody  in the industry appears to have an answer for.
Seems to me that unless you a have proven technology or safety process to prevent what happened at the wellhead, then you have no business being there.

It astounds me that with all the technology and engineering minds out there, the best bet to fix this is to shove mud or 'junk' in the hole.  ???

I agree with MSNBC. Plug the hole with the executives responsible.

I see that the Senators from La. and Ala. have submitted a bill to raise BP's liability for personal damages from $75M to 17B.

Not really. The expectation is for the moment that we will most likely not see any of it. The only possibility is if the spill enters the loop current. Aside from that most all of our winds are from the south. Doesn't matter though.  There's marshland everywhere on the gulf.

....one has to love the irony of reality-

....I'm reading that when the massive explosion occurred on the Deep Horizon, killing the the eleven workers, and blowing one of it's engine rooms off the massive pontoon vessel-

....the Captain was entertaining two BP executives ....

....who were aboard to present a safety award to the skipper....
