Flowers for Conneaut Lake Park
« on: May 23, 2010, 01:42:52 PM »
Do you have any extra flowers?  Help make the Park look nice this summer, and stop by to plant some in the various pots around the park.
Check in at the personnel office across from Kiddieland first.  Every little bit helps.

My daughter & I were at the park tonight to plant flowers in the ground in Kiddieland.  We started a butterfly garden along the sidewalk last year with a butterfly bush, purple coneflowers & monarda.  I was there on Saturday for volunteer weekend & checked on the progress of the plants from last year.  I had cut the butterfly bush back several weeks earlier and it had a few green leaves at the bottom & some coneflowers seedlings were coming up.  Several days later I went out to add some new plants & was dismayed to find the butterfly bush had been removed & the coneflower seedlings had been "weeded".   We replaced the butterfly bush tonight & planted some new coneflowers along with some dianthus & other annuals.   Next year I'll see if it's okay to put a sign out before volunteer weekend saying not to weed because there are perennials planted there.

We also added 6 more bags of mulch tonight & I hope to get some more flowers that attract butterflies to plant behind the kiddieland entrance.  It looks like something has been munching on the marigolds that were planted in the ground, but the ones in the planters are doing great.  The frost got a lot of the petunias, but I mulched around the ones that were left.

I thought for sure we were too early in getting the marigolds in the planters.  I'm too far away to check on them very much, so thank you for tending to them.  A sign would be a very good idea by the plants.  To most (men?) it's either grass or weeds.  Sorry, guys, but it's often true.
Great job, sunflower!

thats the problem with perennials, they are nice, but if you dont know who planted what when and where, you could end up pulling them...really need some sort of plan for the plantings, especially perennials, and document it somewhere...I could help with that if they want....I wouldnt worry about marigolds, they're pretty hardy and can take a moderate frost...perennials could make for some nice beds up by the hotel, along with some bulbs planted this fall....
