Lights out in Sharon
« on: July 05, 2010, 08:45:13 AM »
Just read it this morning..... now they want to shut off and maybe remove streetlights from various locations. I might see some need to be or can be removed but... in some of the neighborhoods.... lighting does haelp keep down the number of human "Cockroaches" at bay.

One thing I do hope...that they didn't use a meter to study this,  as...there are private citizens who do have lights on their personal property and this should NOT be in the equation at all.

I also wonder about Safety Forces and their ability to quickly identify a home. I am not saying some couldn't be removed but , be careful which ones and consider the Hood that they are in.

the only problem i have with the list is that they missed some obvious ones.

The newly rebuilt blocks of shenango avenue between e. state and the P.O. have 2-3x the candlepower of any other street in town. The block of chestnut between the lube and e. state also has an unnecessarily high brightness (while right around the corner on state, you'd think there was a power outage because it's so dark.

The next thing they ought to look into cutting down is the number of 4-way stop intersections and mid-block stop signs for little-traveled alleys. Streets such as jefferson and north oakland aves are the primary streets yet their traffic must stop every 500 feet for glorified driveways.

Here is part of a letter I sent...

I hope they take into consideration the crime areas of Sharon. Human Cockroaches aren't fond of light. I also hope they didn't use light meters in this study because... there are many private citizens who have , so far, been able to finance security lighting on their own property. If the city removes a light because of this and the citizen moves or removes his/her light..a dark area is created for aforementioned Human Cockroaches.

Another point I worry about... the ability of safety forces to come into an area, identify the home or culprits and do their jobs. Sometimes seconds mean the difference in outcomes.

I know our city will nickel and dime to save but they should be taking all possibilities into consideration

As far as STOP SIGNS.... I have fought the OVER USE of them since Mayor Price. 4th Avenue is a good example of overkill. At one point you can see no less than 5 stop signs in a row. I argued this at a city meeting a long time ago. I pressed that the city is NOT a babysitter and that parents need to be more aware of their children and not rely on stop signs on every corner to babysit unattended children. I was told by a now deceased member of Council... "IF ONE STOP SIGN KEEPS ONE CHILD SAFE.... I WILL HAVE THEM INSTALLED WHERE ASKED!!!" (I won't mention his name but his initials were ROTUNNO). If he had his way, EVERY corner would have 4 of them.

Here is our dilemma in my area.... Years ago..East Ward School was tore down..(LOL shades of yesteryear) and the lot became East Ward Playground. Well that ended and they bulldozed the last place our kids could safely play. Now the kids moved WHERE???? the streets. To add insult to injury...our then city fathers used their peanut brains and now that we had NO place for our kids to play ( They even had summer programs for them) in their "infinate wisdom" came up with a GREAT PLAN. In a neighborhood with the kids playing in the street now...they decide to build projects which...you guessed it...have even more children to... yup.... play in the streets. DOHHHHHHH!!!!

Sometimes IQ and Shoe Size are the same numbers and in some cases, can be an insult to shoes all over the world

As if anyone could get up a full head of steam driving down that street anyway. I suspect many of them go back the the days when there were many more children there and that they were walking to and from Jefferson Elementary.

I think it's over on white or wengler just off state where there are a couple inexplicable stops for alleys.

All i know is that when i moved here decades ago my first thought was that clearly someone on council was related to someone who sold Stop signs for a living.

There is a "traffic" layout that when there is a 2 way stop sign in place...the unsigned thoroughfare has the right of way..... but this describes alleys through streets in many instances. I hate to think those driving alleys, have the right of way but.....

Now...what appears to be alleys may not be.... case in point Fullerton in Sharon. Part of it looks like a street but it quickly has an "alley look" as you drive downhill. There may be more out there. I also laugh ...with all of the stop signs out there.... another regulation is that you can not park within a certain distance of a stop sign as well. Hmmmmm could be a source of much needed revenue for the city. I see people parked right UNDER them. Well this from a city who may have a law stating you can be arrested for spitting on the sidewalk.... LOL

I see several frequent violators of the 15-foot rule, and they don't get ticketed, even though being so close to the intersection is just begging for their car to be hit.

Don't knock the spitting-on-the-sidewalk law.  Many such laws go back to the 1918 flu epidemic. Surprisingly, it was one public-health theory that actually turned out to be true, because that was a common way the virus was spreading.
