What do think about the arraignment of Fred Wagner - originally reported $200 - then tonight on the Erie news it sounded like a lot more.  What do you think?

Curious to see what happens. I'd always thought he was a pretty upright fellow. I'm sad to hear this.

I bet Bernie Madoff's friends said the same thing about him too. The truth is.... you never get to see the Dark Side until light is shown on it. For me... I think sometimes if Thought Police were real.... I would be on Death Row   ;) .... otherwise my Grandkids love me.

Lots about it in today's Meadville Tribune.  Interesting that Dr. Chris Thomas sat in on the hearing.  Wonder if Wagner is going to pull the medical card?  This is very sad.

Funny you should mention the Med card.... This is why I have a REEEAAAAAL problem with BI-POLAR. We have had 2 people who I know.... in our Valley who played it and got off with basically the loss of their job.

One pilfered hundreds of thousands of dollars from a bank she worked for... husband couldn't figure out how he was able to buy those suits and that new home but kept mum about it. She lost her job... spent months in a LOW SECURITY facility and can pay restitution at a few dollars a crack.. Can't get that interest from a bank LOL and it ends on death. Good deal... Oh...did I mention, they still have the home??

The other... in charge of the Tax Office in a local city. Seems she loved when people paid their taxes with cash... again... many thousands missing....

Both pulled the BI-POLAR crap and got a hand slap. Those they actually hurt in their actions.... screwed as well as the business and community they worked for.

I miss any payment on anything.... I am nailed...I take anything.... I lose my right hand.... Is this because I think.... key word think.... I am sane????

Mind you, neither of these people came from a hardship family and were part and parcel a "pillar" of their community. So final thoughts..... IF Wagner did this and he does play that card..... I say he didn't take ENOUGH. Even at the few thousand dollar level, that is chump change.... if he has this call in his future.

Believe me...I don't condone this crap... hell I don't even "fudge" my tax returns. But I do speed from time to time  ;) . It will be MY luck that when I do get nailed for speeding, I will be the one tazed on the hood of a police car just for GP. At the very least, if you do commit a crime, leave no paper trail or "bodies" to be found, while you still breath. That is my story and I am sticking to it...  ;D .

I think you made a very good point. Why take chump change if you are in a position like that? Why bring this out now... just two weeks before the Fair? It's almost too obvious.

Yeah - you said it dude.

As to Mr. Wagner. I was thinking about it a bit this morning. This story has an incredible ring to it for me . . .

In my hometown, my maternal grandfather was imprisoned for embezzling money from some of the town's pension funds. A total of $365K. The investigation involved the FBI.

See - he was the city comptroller and the head of the bank where the funds were kept. (They really needed to de-centralize power in that situation.) He plead no contest and went to Federal prison in Allenwood. Spent most of the time in the hospital wing as he had severe Parkinson's disease by that time. Shortly after his release - he died. All the property was jointly owned - so the Feds couldn't seize it from my Grandmother too - but he died "penniless." After his death, the Feds harassed my Grandmother till she died - and then down to her two kids.

Thing is - it was a ponzi scheme and a lot of the money 'found it's way back' and was recovered. Someone in on the scheme (it helped fund the town's political hierarchy) blew the whistle. My grandfather took full responsibility and clammed up - taking the fall for more than one person.

He was a pillar of the community as well. Often lending to people no other banks would, helping businesses start - etc. I had a very happy childhood in no small part due to that man - who was more like a father to me than my own Dad . . .

When the headlines hit the town it was . . . well, it's hard to say exactly what it was because I still haven't put my finger on it.

I don't know why my grandfather did what he did. I once saw him give his winter coat to a poor homeless man. He and my grandmother gave to UNICEF and "adopted" a number of African kids sending money for food for them. He steadfastly tithed at the Church he attended, He provided a wonderful home to his wife, kids and grandkids . . .

And embezzled $365K from the town.

I loved him very much.

I hope Mr. Wagner is able to sort this out in the best, most honest way possible. I hope he comes clean if he did do something untoward and takes responsibility for it. Our family didn't completely become the town pariahs in the aftermath of my grandfather's actions, but we had to deal with a lot of fallout. (The clamming up on his part protected some folks - but not us as a family.)

This is sad all around . . . in more ways than is apparent . . . .

I remember the fiasco over the office donut fund a few years back.. They had him then but excused him. I bet now they wish they woulda canned him then!  Never take your eye off a rat that is stockpiling corn.   :nono:

Two different people that I work with said that it isn't political.  They say that people have complained for years and nothing was ever done.  Still so sad.

Morris Waid, Republican
Fred Wagner, Republican

Mr Waid asked for the security cameras to be installed, so you cannot say it is political. OTOH, Mr. Waid suddenly became ethical near retirement? If this has been a problem for some time, then those that knew are just as much to blame.

My thoughts are with Fred and the Crawford County Fair Board, and I hope there will be a favorable outcome for all in the end.
