It all starts to add up

And we wonder why government costs so much.

Sharon and Hermitage are applying for a $200,000 state grant to study traffic patterns on the length of state street in sharon and hermitage and on irvine avenue. Depending on what they learn, it'll help them apply for more money to do... stuff.

That's about $30,000 a mile or $6 a foot. Just to write a report. For that kind of money, they could almost run a line of new curbing the full length. Hey, here's a conclusion: Finish the freeway bridges and maybe sync a couple traffic lights. (Non-existent) problem solved.

Meanwhile, candidate, er, i mean congressman altmire buzzed into farrell the other day with $200,000 in free federal money for the farrell school library for books and computers and to open it to the public in the evenings. You know, the kind of thing the city library 4 blocks down the hill wishes it could do.

And the books... so old. Why, i bet he found a children's book about a pig and a spider published 50 years ago. And a copy of Gone With The Wind that had to be from the 30s. Have they no money to buy new books? They do now!

Meanwhile the struggling city library ought to be the one getting the money, and the school ought to be consolidating with one of the other 3 districts within 5 miles, not remodeling and expanding its facilities.

More importantly, if education is a state/local matter (states' rights, and all), why is anyone dropping bags of our money in Farrell or any other targeted school district (especially weeks before an election)? And in the same week hopes for another $200K just to STUDY traffic patterns when there's barely money to fix bridges or pave beat-up local streets.

THIS is why government costs so much and accomplishes little.

And i won't even get into Sharon having to fix up its empty parking garage mainly because it made the mistake of saying it would as part of some grant applications. That's another half-million in someone's money, and i'm thinking it's yours and mine.

Here is where it gets really pissy. I asked a long time ago if monies can be re-allocated to another project needed more and this is the answer...

The money is either GRANT money for a SPECIFIC type of project or it is similar to a WAM project with the dollars again being specifically targeted. This is why you have street projects to beautify streets through an empty or dying business district. How do you like the indent parking in downtown Sharon??? I came back home in 1975 and Thanksgiving that year I think.... the High Rise Parking Lot in Down Town Sharon was opened and people got to park for FREE LOL. I parked in it... my first and only time. Many men in white hats came over to me and asked me what i thought of this great structure. Mind you... I left the military to come home to a valley with NO jobs to be had. I told them, they were too late with too little. You needed an thriving downtown to have a need for this type of structure. At the time the city had already hemorraged. The money they got for this, I would suspect was applied for when they thought they had a shot at rejuvinating.... " build it and they will come." attitude. Now look at it.... no longer charging to use it, falling to crap with bicycles hanging in the tree as kids go up there and throw them off. Women can't use it for fear of...well you fill that in and if the police do have time to check it...they sometimes find couples in various stages of doing a nasty. Yup Progress....and to think...that money may have been better spent elsewhere but... the $$$$ are targeted to SPECIFIC PROJECTS nothing more. And here is the kicker..... if we don't USE that money...it is given to ANOTHER city to do the same thing for them. Our Government has 2 basic problems when doling out OUR money.... one..it is Anal Retentive on giving the money for SPECIFIC type projects and first come, first serve is the rule but in the end it WILL be used and...when given a budget, they seem to think they have to use it ALL for that year or they will have less to give out the following year so you may end up with some strange project getting funded and YES..... we are within 2 months of a mid term election and the money will fly like a Johns paycheck in a multi-purpose Whore House. But.... Look closely folks...we will welcome them, wine and dine them and tell them what Great people they are just before they hand us that check of money thet was OURS...repeat OURS in the first place. Does anyone here think it strange that.... our Government has NO money of it's own. They rely on the TAXES we are forced to pay, and then we have to schmooze them to get BACK OUR money we gave in the first place. And to add insult to injury, we are denied OUR MONEY if we don't COMPLY to their wishes ....say like driving 55..remember Mr. Carter holding OUR money over OUR HEAD for Highway funds..... many other examples of this crap...this is just one. So we put up signs, welcoming our Legislators into our area and bow like servants when they drop a check from OUR account off. Anyone see something wrong with this or is it just meanspirited me?? If you think our books in Farrell are bad...check this one out...
