Life's son is a wonderful young man, I agree. I am pleased to know him.

Shabby: I clean out public lavatories.  Father: Is there promotion involved?  Shabby: Oh yeah, yeah.  After five years they give me a brush.

....in 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grade I spent my summers in the seat of a Ford 8n pulling a Brush Hog cutting runways for $2/week (works out to a tad over $15 adjusted for inflation :o )....

....in high school I 'stepped up' it up to shoveling horse turds for 50 cent/hr; I count my blessings having that life-time skill ingrained as if the economy collapses I can still swing a mean shovel all day long these days if I had to ;) ....

I had brush hog duty one day every other week. I hated it because we had no a screen on the back of the tractor ans the idiot golfers thought it was cute to chuck the  tee markers off into the weeds. It was not so node when one of those metal tee markers went whizzing past your head at warp one. Rule 1 on brush hog day... stay in the crouched position!

So true Kimmi, but I have to tell you, I wouldn't have lasted a day in your class, you're TOUGH!! I was too much of a cut up.

The cut ups like me because I give them boundaries.  : )

But see that is my point, I worked at Tamarack Packaging on the same machine for three summers in high school, waited tables at the Elks, and babysat numerous children.  So many kids today don't work, don't pay for their car insurance or gas even, and still get an allowance into their high school years for doing practically nothing.  It is insane to think they will run the country with that poor work ethic!  Ugh!

Yes Kimmi, but remember our parents said the same thing about us too and their parents said it about them and so on. Kids today a smarter and dumber than we give them credit for. It all depends on which one shows up that day.

That's my plan too, Gore  ;)  btw, are you safe out there? I saw the news and sent a quick prayer out your way.

True. I think in some ways there were dumber kids 'back then', we just didn't have you tube to show it to millions of people at once.

My 16 y.o. works at The Movies.  Just started a few weeks ago.  He really wanted to get a job and I had reservations because I fear his academics will slide.  But it's only like 10-12 hours a week and most of it on the weekend so it should turn out well.  He LOVES it too.  He is such a good kid :)

Earliest jobs other than chores around the house before I was able and old enough to get a job at Generous Sharon Steel...

Mowing elder neighbors lawns for $.50 to a dollar... also shoveled their walks and driveways for similar fees and some just some cookies and hot chocolate. When we were kids, we drove the older residents crazy with our youthful noises but, the neighborhood was still a neighborhood and we tried to make sure we all were ok. When a Family in the neighborhood had infirmity or death, we ALL came to pitch in if needed and had genuine sympathy.

I was a 10 Pin and Duck Pin setter at Sharon Recreation ( up stairs over the Diamond Cafe on Water. ( 5 cents a game for Ducks and 10 cents for 10 pin.

I hayed in the summer..$.50/hour and a big meal from the Farmer's wife, usually under a tree on long tables at their home.

Washed cars (By hand) at Sharon Car Wash across from the American Legion... $1/hour if weather was good.

Was a (piss poor ) printer at Whitehead Eagle. I used the letter presses and was lucky I didn't lose a finger(s) at times. I operated a Heildelberg. The Linotype that I got my lines of type from .... I believe is in the lobby of the Herald. I remember the elderly fellow smoking a cigar as he operated it as the hot lead pot was smoking as the cooled lead line was dropping into place. This was also for $1/hour.

And then a job at Sharon Steel Electric Furnace... $5.50/hour. I was rolling in dough *S*. The rest was military and the job I finally retired from.

Over all, I feel fortunate to have been able to work within 3 miles of my home (sans military) all my life.

Now as far as smart...not so smart.... we got an education at home.... it was the work ethic of our parents and the ability to know what was right, wrong and downright nasty. My parents hands were to pat me on my head or back but when I went off track... pinked up the buttocks a bit. I cannot remember the first spanking I got in school but it never hurt more than the one I got when my father came home. My last whack on the back came from Mr. Varkonda in Mechanical Drawing. After I became an adult I kept in touch with George and was friends with him. The spanking always gave us both a chuckle. His Self Designed "Board of Education" was space aged but worked well LOL.

I am an old fogie by most standards and I do believe that kids today are smart but book smarts and Practicals are a mile apart at times. Even Einstein couldn't drive a car. Too many today, rely on things operated by batteries and WiFi and not enough in real thought. I cannot remember knowing any households that had their 25 year old sons and daughters still living at home unless they were mentally or physically infirmed in some way. Our parents seemed to have taught us how and gave us the tools to survive outside the family unit. Today, I notice, that is not in many's agenda.

With my generation I remember my father's broken english and his advice in life... "You no work, you no eat." Today seems to exude.. " You don't work.... Don't worry, someone will have to feed you." I could go on but won't. Education is good but how many BS degrees do we need working at Burger King, as opposed to Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Mechanics etc. If the College Ed is good....how many will even stay or be able to stay in the area they grew up in.... near the family.?? ( unless you hated your family??*S*). All in all, you start at the bottom.... that is life.( unless your Daddy is the owner LOL ).

It's a process for sure. The process has definately changed over the years.  I had to leave Pa to get a start. When I moved to Alaska at age 22 and was 5,000 + miles from my nearest relative the cold reality sank in that I am on my own. From there I did my best to try and grow up. Some kids get it and some don't. We all draw on lifes experiences because it's what we know. If we don't get those experiences well then were somewhat screwed. I guess I'm going to drag my 8 year old outside and make him help me. I may have to bribe him, but he'll learn something he won't learn in front of a monitor of whatever kind.

... ... :eyebrow: ...Who's Shabby... ... ...

That would be Ken Shabby from a rather excellent Monty Python skit that I have ingrained in my memory from my younger years watching the show on TV (Along with Benny Hill of course). I thought it might have brought a smile to anyone who was also a Python fan and remembered the skit...but alas and fore-soothe...the silence was deafening. LOL

I think it may be because we have our own brand of Funny Talking and Walking people who claim to be home grown... *S*

This is the book I put in the original post. I highly recommend it. HIGHLY. There is a VAST difference between education and indoctrination.

Indoctrinated fish don't question the water they swim in . . . .

OMG - school open house tonight.  Ugh.  My daughter has been in school for exactly 8 days.  I guess we shall see what opinions the teacher has formulated.
