Would it be disrespectful to call our legislators to find out who came up
with this decision?  I would not want to hurt the family members for any
reason, and I don't know if they would even find out if someone was
questioning the reasoning for this much land.  Seriously, Ami and I can't
be the only two people who have visited this site, and 2200 acres sounds
like about 2000 acres too many.

Jayhawk, can you direct us on how to access this information?  Now you
have me wondering how much it cost to repair the Pentagon.  We all know
that the Trade Centers are going to be in the billions, which I can accept,
but those of us who follow the news broadcasts are seeing that alot of
money is being misappropriated with no one watching.

Is it possible that they had the opportunity to buy that much land and have plans to do other things there as well.........along with the memorial?  Or not have plans right now

From what I understood from watching the shows both Saturday and Sunday, the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville is to OPEN next Sept. 11th.
I would think that from the sounds of what they plan to do, it will probably
take a year to build it and have it ready.

If Jayhawk says sixty million, they may already have the plans drawn up
and approved, which that in itself takes many months to get accomplished.
Not too many people were sympatethic with taking this long to get any
of the memorial sites done.  In some ways, it is hard to believe that it has
already been nine years.  They even did a piece on young soldiers who
were too young to understand nine years ago what even was going on,
yet now they are fighting the war that this event brought on.  They
interviewed a girl, that at age 12, really does not remember her father
that lost his life that day. The family keeps bringing out pictures and
telling her stories about him so that she will have something to remember
about him.  That is a tear-jerker to me.

The biggest question that I have right now, why has the amount of property and the sixty million been kept so quiet?  That is over one
million per person on that plane that day.  I am curious which President
was in office when this deal was put together.

Might be a state deal.

I've seen that figure or ones close to it in several places. Here's two from this week:

http://kdka.com/local/Shanksville.memorial.service.2.1908166.html
There have been 1.4 million people who have visited the temporary  memorial that has been set up near the crash site. It is hoped that by  next year, the first phase of the $60 million national memorial will  open to the public for the 10 anniversary.

How  do you keep the rural flavor of the area when a $60 million permanent  memorial is under way and a quarter of a million people are expected to  visit it every year?

What, a theme park? A college? An outlet mall? That's a LOT of land.

I'm more bothered by the out-of-proportion cost of the whole project (which, BTW, is supposed to be 50-50 donations/govt. funds)

Yes, and that is why we have legislators.  Their phone numbers are listed
in the Tribune, and each one should be contacted with how you feel about
this.

It needs to be in a compassionate way, but letting them know that sixty
million could build an appropriate memorial, and even possibly more things
like a school or something that people could say with pride that they learned a skill from the Flight 93 Trade School (just an example).  That
would really make people like Lisa Beamer and the others know that the
lives of the ones they lost will go on in a good way, by helping others.
Just my opinion.

I suspect that the gov't wants to keep the memorial site "pristine" but really so they bought the land. Or maybe the owners pushed a deal to make $, I don't know, just guessing. Just ask the farmers to keep on farming. A little tractor noise would be good - a reminder that life does go on.

I have a real problem with these expensive memorials anyway.  I have always felt that the WTC site should be left open, parks, fountains, etc. to memorialize what happened. None of this new building stuff. When I saw the plan to build that tall, skinny memorial tower, well, I didn't like it nor think it was necesary. Anyone know if they are still building it? I stopped following the action then.
