Replace the roof on the Sharpsville Historical Society's building
« on: September 23, 2010, 10:31:32 AM »
This project will preserve our museum and headquarters located in the Chloe Pierce memorial chapel.  We will use the money to replace the deteriorated original roof and make needed repairs to the steeple.  We acquired this building 10 years ago with the assistance of the community who contributed toward the purchase.  Our intent was to preserve this piece of history and providing a repository and museum for historical artifacts.  Since acquiring the building we have  had it placed on the National Register for Historic Places.  In the past 2 years, we have raised $15,000 toward the restoration project by holding Operas and other events.
How will the 50K be Used?

$ 5,000     Repair damaged wood trim on the steeple
$ 5,000    Remove existing roof
$ 40,000    Material and Labor to install new roof

if this involves ripping off a century-old slate roof and replacing it with shingles that will last at best 25 yrs, they are nuts and actually could repair what they have for the same or less than replacement cost. And it'll last 2-3x longer.

There's a nationally renown slate-repair expert who lives right here in grove city; there was a story about him in the paper a year or two ago.

...no matter...how big or small...one blows a bubble...there will always be some one there waiting to Pop it... ::) ...
I'm not popping anyone's bubbles. I'm just pointing out that if they are truly doing what the description says (ripping off the original 1890s roof) they would be squandering part of what little money they have while degrading a building significant enough to be on the National Register. And i have already made a contact regarding the project.

I voted again today. Is this the first month for this or will it be eligible for another run. If so we may be able to swing a "campaign" so to speak anyhow.

Make me understand something. I thought this forum was about CL, Meadville area and Crawford County in general. Why do we care about Sharon or these other areas that seem to have krept into this forum. Just asking OK. Fill me in.

Nope, Trying to cover Crawford, Mercer, Venango &  Erie counties here. As far as I know this is the only general interest forum in the area. Others exist but are much more specialized.

Don't forget to vote for the Conneaut Lake Historical Society Museum project too. They're at #68 in the 25k category.  They also need roof repairs and they house lots of local history information regarding Conneaut Lake Park.

As a member of the Sharpsville Historical Society, I would like to thank you for your support in voting for our idea.  Seeing the Blue Streak in the running for the grant was what inspired us to enter as well.  I didn't know the Conneaut Lake Historical Museum was in until I visited the museum a couple weeks ago.
I have been urging all our members to vote for Conneaut Lake Historical Museam as we  did for the Blue Streak.   Thank you again for your interest and support.

Thank you gperrine. I wish we could have gotten wind of this earlier than what we did though. It's going to be a tough trip to get it into the top 100 in 4 days.

Well it's moved up almost 20 places to position 136 since it was first mentioned. Just for giggles I posted a like to it on face book betting my friends they could not vote on this and get their friends to vote too. Will it get traction in time? I don't know but it's worth a shot.
