Is Crime on the Rise?
« on: October 24, 2010, 08:13:03 PM »
on Friday night (well Saturday morning) at 3am my hubby happened to be awake and moving around and heard someone breaking into our home through the basement. He called the police and they were here in less than two minutes. The intruder fled and no one was able to find him/her. Our neighbors have had their cars broken into and there has been some crime (break in's) going on one street over. Is it me or is crime on the rise around here?

We nailed our garage door shut since they picked the lock. Hubby and I are looking into buying a pistol for the home. We got a guard dog a few months ago but he is still a pup and in training. Not sleeping well these days!

I believe (and it is only my opinion) that the state of the economy has something to do with it.  Also drugs play a big part in people being desperate to get money.  I too have struggled with getting the gun issue.  We have a 22 but haven't gotten any further than that.  My dog is very vocal, but I know in my heart of hearts that if someone wanted in they could shoot her so quick that it wouldn't matter.  Be careful, I know I keep my doors and windows locked.

That must make it a real pain in the ass to get the car out every morning to go to work.

Why oh why do people want handgund  to defend their home? I have tried to convince my wife the a 12 gauge is a much more effective deterrent and all around better choice. The point is to get whoever out of your house or off your property. A 12 gauge will accomplish that. If I were a criminal and someone was holding a handgun I would not be too concerned unless they looked like they knew what they were doing. A shotgun aimed at me would give me wings (in more than one manner of speaking)

NIGHTMARE,  I totally agree about the shotgun.  If a "Perk" hears the familiar "click, click, when chambering a pump shotgun, they will often leave in a hurry.  If they heard it but still are moving in your house, you are often dealing with someone high on drugs and/or alcohol, and that spells Trouble with a capital T.  A shotgun is best for home defense.  Many with a handgun miss their target due to their excitement, adrenalin rush, etc., and the slug can go through the walls and maybe hit another person, animal, objects, (like your car), outside your house. A shotgun is just a simple VERY EFFECTIVE "point and fire" device which often will save the perk from suing you and winning in our liberal court system, because they will be going to the morgue, after a shotgun blast in the center mass area.   I prefer the 12 gauge Mossberg model 500 with pistol grips.  If an intruder sees that "mean mother",  ;D  they will think twice IF they are in a state to have LOGICAL thinking and processing ability!

I think you mean 'perp' as in perpetrator . . . unless you're really talkin' bout somebody who's had too much coffee - then I suppose 'perk' would work . . . :-)

Just reading the crime reports and the circumstance and you see it heavily on 3 plains.... Economic, Chemical Dependency, and lousy human interaction. For me... I had my other home stripped of wire and copper pipe and then a few months later...an oxy filled, non insured vehicle operator decided to take the scenic route through the north corner of my porch. I lost, as a victim, to people who don't have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out. The guy who did the drivethrough will end up in better shape than I.... In the meantime, he is out on his ...now get this.... own recognizance

"an obligation of record entered into before a court or magistrate, binding a person to do or not do something, be in court at a certain time, etc."

Riiiiight. If he was able to accomplish that guideline in the first place, my property would still be intact. Revolving door...and speaking of revolving.... I agree with the shotgun use and I would buy a used one, unplugged or expanded, and cut the barrel DOWN to minimum legal to get a larger spread pattern. Now... I have both...Shotguns and various handguns. BUT... never utilize a loaded weapon to protect yourself unless YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT PULLING THE TRIGGER. If you are not serious, you may find your "new" friend, just might be drugged up or "brave" enough to take it from you and beat the crap out of any worst day you ever had. NEVER EVER AIM FOR THE HEAD OR EXTREMITIES. Law enforcement is trained.... double tap up to empty and the target for every weapon they use...center of mass. Cops are not trained to WOUND. Neither are Soldiers. If they do pass the Castle Doctrine in PA .... I think that is a step forward. The problem is.... AHOLES are adding restrictions and regulations to it, everytime it is being read.

And ... Ladies... if you do personal carry and have your piece in your purse...you have 2 problems.... getting to it and sorry... I feel revolvers are a better weapon for many because they can take the loose stuff in your purse.

Most women who fire a semi auto and if it is 9mm or larger...they tend to get stovepipe because of wrists that give to much from recoil... at least wit a revolver, you don't need to clear a stovepipe or misfire...you just pull the trigger again. Add to that..some purses eat Semi's for prior stated reason.... a revolver is more foregiving. But.... I prefer CC on the body. Maybe a good conceal holster with say... a Walther PPKS SS with HP380. Big enough to do the job (9mm Kurz) but small enough to hide/handle and almost stovepipe proof. For men.... anything you can hide but access when needed and doesn't go further than the hit target. IMHO

Oh..and isn't it a hoot when you read that a home invader, came through an OPEN/UNLOCKED window on the fist floor and remove a 40-55 inch tv and always seem to know where the homeowner has their pain drugs... Hmmmmm.

My house is as tight as the thickness of window glass...well with a few other deterrents *S* . Why would you go to bed and leave a 1st floor window open or unlocked or even your vehicle for that matter??? Amazes me. If your home is too hot at night... buy a one room AC..bedroom a good place.... but LOCK UP for God's Sake.

I remember years ago when we lived in a not too nice neighborhood, my husband took nails and made it so that you couldn't open the windows further than an inch.  We couldn't afford air conditioning then so we had our windows only open an inch.  Thankfully we are now living in a better neighborhood, but I wonder if things will get more stupid while the economy is suffering.  A lot of people I know will be running out of unemployment.  Very scary.

LIFE, You are correct, I meant "perp".  They could be "perked" if they happen to drink too much of this new caffeine/alcohol drink that has been in the news lately!  ;D

I remember, years ago in Sharon.... most of the Crime was in the areas South of the Viaduct. The families who lived on the upper East side...Highland, Case, Forker almost smuggly laughed that they were in no like situation. Well...time went by and the "Bad Boys" figured they could get better "stuff" ....... in the Highland, Case, Forker Area...... So much for "I am invincible. My point...

living in town is no protection....no matter what part of town you live in, and if you are in the Burbs and "country...you are an isolated target.... longer for safety forces to address your problem and in some cases... empty house with no close neighbors can lead to many issues you think you are immune from.

Fact is ...keep an eye on the police reports and listen to the scanners... More crime in neighborhoods and more shoplifter calls as CHRISTMAS is about 60 days away. Combine that with unemployment, chemicals, and downright brain disfunction...and you have an interesting time of year. Oh and not to mention the REVOLVING DOOR in our JUDICIAL system.

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.... and yesw...I still say MERRY CHRISTMAS and when in stores I make sure I say that LOUDLY to the Clerk who just served me.

Happy Winter Holidays???? BAHHHHH HUMBUG!!!

Most of the places that do that want to sell you a "service" like ADT, Brinks, HomeScam, etc. I'm sure there are places that will sell/install one, but all you'll probably get is a noisemaker unless you go the home automation route.

Some of the Computer repair/sale/setup places sell and install equiptment that would allow you to access your property on the internet on your own but... yes..it comes to a service you pay monthly otherwise. I sometimes, catch this radio show on WKBN on the weekends and I think they set this personal system up... but you can check..

I wonder what a hypo dart full of oxy would do on the Pit. But I won't walk or bath but will slide a hose through the window crack or mailslot with some dry dog food to follow... and if someone does break in..hold off the feeding for a week or so *S* Hows that?

...our primary resident...we own the system...which means if we want to change service...which we have...no one can come and take the system...but the company that we purchased this system does not do the whole USA...most companies want to give you the system free...or for $99...then charge you hefty monthly fees...not looking for that....

Lifetime...like the rabid pitbull...are you volunteering to walk, bath, water and feed the pitbull for us...since we live outside of the area...LOL... ;) ...it could be great fun...and excerise...LOL... ;D ...for the pitbull...and maybe you... ...

...  ...I am sure that the furniture...hardwood floors...etc...would look great in a week... ...after a week of that...I would have to be more afraid of my spouse...then the Pitbull...thanks for the offer...but I will hold out for an alarm system... ;D ...

Another thing that will deter a burgular is an outside motion light or two. Once those babies come on it lights up and the burgular will take off in a hurry.
