antique mirror
« on: November 16, 2010, 08:49:10 PM »
i recently acquired a large antique mirror at a local auction that was  purportedly from a Meadville hotel or bar. It may have come from the Dave Mead inn. Anyone have any input/history?

I believe the David Mead Inn was a community-owned hotel not unlike Sharon's former Shenango Inn. Both were built in the 1950s and both are today assisted living homes for seniors.

it also could have come from the actual home of david mead, founder of the 'ville, which would make it far more historic.

I suspect that given the intricacy of the carvings and the workmanship of the piece that it is much older than the 1950's. I would date it to somewhere between 1880-1920 but that is just my amateur guesstimate. When I asked the daughter at the estate sale, she was unable to specify the origin other than it purportedly came from a Meadville hotel or bar. The tie-in to David Mead Inn was that her mother had worked there in days past and it may have originated there but again with the age of the piece and your provided history, I doubt that it would have only been produced in the 1950s.

n.b. Special thanks to NP for helping me embed the photos. BTW The room shown was where they had the mirror at the estate sale. It was one heavy sucker to move but I had my brother-in-law and my wife take one end and I the other and it worked out fine!

Thank you! We have the perfect spot already chosen for it to hang/set. Now I just need to construct an appropriate ornate base to support and complement it.

wow, that's beautiful. Quite the trophy. Obviously not modern.

It's a shame, though, to remove it from where it had been. It was such a perfect complement for the paneling and vinyl flooring.

Yeah, I know. I made a bid for the panelling and vinyl floor too ..... alas, they stayed with the house. LOL.

That Troyer Antiques guy on 19, towards Saegertown, might be able to ID it. I have seen items like that in his potato barn.

I've been trying to remember the decor in the David Mead. The general feel I remember, but the details escape me. I do remember seeing large mirrors in the hotel but I could not tell you if that particular piece came from there. It would fit right in though. Either way it's a great piece (and a heavy one I bet)

I certainly was never in it, but i have a hunch that because it was, if i'm not mistaken, built as a cozy, community-owned hotel like (and at the same time as) sharon's shenango inn, it probably was colonial in decor.

I don't think the David Mead was community owned. A great deal of it's visitors were on business with Talon, which went down the tubes and took the hotel with it I suspect. Maybe there were other reasons too. It's been quite a while though. I've never been to the Shenango Inn so I can't draw any comparisons between the two either.

Reminds me of Darkness' mirror in the movie Legend.
